    Abstract: THE INVENTION PROVIDES AN IMPROVED METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR TREATING WATER CONTAINING SUSPENDED SOLIDS FROM A SANITARY SYSTEM. IN CARRYING OUT THE METHOD, THE WATER IS AERATED AND DELIVERED TO A SCREEN WITH A DIRECTIONAL COMPONENT ACROSS THE SCREEN SURFACE AND A DIRECTIONAL COMPONENT THROUGH THE SCREEN. THE SCREEN HAS OPENINGS LARGE ENOUGH TO PASS THE MAJORITY OF THE SOLIDS SUSPENDED IN THE WATER, AND HAS THE ABILITY TO HOLD A COATING OF THESE SOLIDS ON ITS UPSTREAM SIDE. THE FLOW OF WATER IS CONTROLLED SO THAT A COATING OF THE SUSPENDED SOLIDS FROM THE WATER IS FORMED ON THE SCREEN SURFACE. THE DELIVERY OF WATER CONTAINING THESE SUSPENDED SOLIDS TO THE SCREEN IS CONTINUED WITH A DIRECTIONAL COMPONENT ACROSS THE SCREEN AND A DIRECTIONAL COMPONENT THROUGH THE SCREEN, WHEREBY TO FILTER SOLIDS FROM THE WATER PASSING THROUGH THE COATING AND SCREEN. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DIRECTIONAL COMPONENTS ACROSS AND THROUGH THE SCREEN IS CONTROLLED TO MAINTAIN THE COATING ON THE SCREEN. THE WATER THAT IS PASSED THROUGH THE SCREEN IS STORED, AND IS RECYCLED TO THE SANITARY SYSTEM.

    Abstract: A gas diffuser including a conically-shaped diffuser cone having a plurality of openings formed along the base circumference of the cone for liberating small gas bubbles. Connected to an opening formed in the apex of the cone is a hydrostatic leg depending therefrom. The length of the hydrostatic leg is designed such that during normal operation no gas will pass therethrough. The openings in the diffuser cone include an outer entrance opening and a recessed inner entrance opening. The inner opening is of square shape to release a small bubble. The top of the diffuser cone includes a unique seat and latch connecting arrangement that enables the diffuser to be installed in an opening in gas header pipes of varying diameters.

    Abstract: An improved apparatus for the cleaning of filter beds of a filtration apparatus which comprises a plurality of filter units, each of the units having an upper influent zone, a filter bed, and a lower filtrate zone, and including means for pumping liquid from all of the filtrate zones at a given pumping rate. In accordance with the invention, during the service cycle, liquid is pumped by the pump means from the filtrate zones to service, so that it passes through the filter bed in a downflow direction. When one of the filter units requires backwashing, the pump means is employed to pump liquid simultaneously from the filtrate zones of a majority of the filter units, so that the backwash rate is greater than the normal downflow rate through the filter unit. As an alternative to backwashing a minority of the filter unit with liquid from the majority of the units, or in addition thereto, the increased backwashing rate can be provided by increasing the pumping rate beyond the given rate during the backwashing by using booster pump means.

    Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for removing suspended solids from liquids. In carrying out the method, a liquid containing suspended solids is delivered to a screen with a directional component across the screen surface and a directional component through the screen. The screen has openings that are large enough to pass a majority of the suspended solids, and the screen has the ability to hold a layer of the solids on the upstream side thereof. The flow of the liquid is controlled so that the coating is formed and maintained on the screen, and serves as a filtration medium. The invention also provides improved apparatus which comprises means defining a liquid filtration zone having a screen separating it into influent and effluent zones. The screen has openings large enough to pass the majority of suspended solids and has the ability to hold a layer of the solids on the upstream side. Means are provided for delivering liquids and suspended solids to the screen with a directional component parallel to the face of the screen and a directional component through the screen.
