Abstract: An additive manufacturing system for forming a component including a compression rig including a compression head supporting a top compression device applying a compressive load onto a top surface of the component, a pair of temperature sensors positioned on opposite sides of the top compression device and detecting a temperature of the top surface of the component, and a pair of distance sensors positioned on opposite sides of the top compression device and detecting a distance to the top surface of the component, and a controller configured to adjust a position of the compression rig and a load applied by the top compression device based on at least one of the detected temperatures and distances.

Disclosed herein is an apparatus comprising controller circuitry to determine a configuration for manufacture of a part, the part having a first portion and a second portion, an additive manufacturing machine to manufacture the part according to the configuration, and a force application device to apply a force to the part during manufacture, the force specified in the configuration to produce a desired grain size, the desired grain size including a first grain size and a second grain size, wherein the first portion is formed with the first grain size and the second portion is formed with the second grain size.

Abstract: Systems and method are provided for predicting an expected mechanical property, such as fatigue strength, for a component with a cellular structure or a portion thereof. In some embodiments, a method for predicting fatigue strength includes receiving, by a control circuit, image data for a specimen to reconstruct 3D models of the specimen. The specimen includes at least one cell of a cellular structure. The method further includes determining a local stresses for the specimen via finite element analysis of the three-dimensional models. The control circuit may then determine a fatigue strength for the specimen based on the local stresses to generate a distribution function of the fatigue strength for the at least one cell of the cellular structure. The control circuit then applies statistics of extremes to the distribution function to predict an expected fatigue strength of a number of cells in the cellular structure.
