Abstract:
A seal includes a housing having a back plate and a front plate. A supporting bristle layer is disposed adjacent to the back plate, and bristles in the supporting bristle layer have a first diameter. A sealing bristle layer is disposed adjacent to the supporting bristle layer, and bristles in the sealing bristle layer have a second diameter. A shielding/protecting bristle layer is disposed adjacent to the sealing bristle layer, and bristles in the shielding/protecting bristle layer have a third diameter. The second diameter is smaller than both the first diameter and the third diameter.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for controlling a clearance between a rotor and a stator of a steam turbine during transient operations rely upon heating or cooling a shell support structure of the steam turbine that supports the stator of the steam turbine. Selectively heating or cooling the shell support structure makes it possible for thermal growth/contraction rates and magnitudes of the shell support structure to better match the thermal growth/contraction rates and magnitudes of a bearing support structure of the steam turbine during transient operations. As a result, the clearance between the rotor and the stator of the steam turbine can be maintained.
Abstract:
A seal arrangement between radially-opposed rotating and stationary components in a turbomachine includes a first rotating component, a second stationary component, and a brush seal located radially therebetween. The brush seal has an axially-extending portion secured to the second stationary component, and an inwardly-extending portion extending across a gap between the first and second components. An inner ring portion of the second stationary component is located radially inward of, and in engagement with the axially-extending portion and at least part of the inwardly-extending portion of the brush seal, wherein an end of the axially-extending portion of the brush seal remote from the inwardly-extending portion is sandwiched between a pair of side rails fixed between the inner ring portion and an outer ring portion of the second stationary component.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed toward a face seal including a stator ring configured to be disposed about a rotor of a turbine, wherein stator ring comprises a first ring segment and a second ring segment configured to cooperatively form the stator ring, wherein the first and second ring segments are circumferentially split and have at least one bearing element disposed between the first and second ring segments, and wherein the at least one bearing element is configured to enable relative axial motion between the first and second ring segments at interfaces between the first and second ring segments.
Abstract:
A seal assembly for sealing between a rotating component and a stationary component in a turbomachine. The seal assembly includes a plurality of radially inwardly projecting, axially spaced teeth extending from the stationary component, wherein at least one of the plurality of teeth has at least one axially extending hole therethrough. Axial flow of an operating fluid through the holes acts as an air-curtain to interrupt swirl flow in a seal cavity, therefore reducing steam force that could act to destabilize rotordynamics.
Abstract:
An aspirating face seal for use with a rotary machine includes a rotating seal ring including a radially outer surface that includes an oblique portion. A stationary seal ring is coupled proximate the rotating seal ring such that a first gap is defined therebetween. The stationary seal ring is movable along a centerline axis of the rotary machine between an open position and a sealed position, and includes an extension member that extends across the first gap. An auxiliary seal includes at least one seal tooth that includes a seal tooth tip. The at least one seal tooth extends radially inward from the extension member such that a second gap is defined between the seal tooth tip and the oblique portion.
Abstract:
An actuation system to control clearance in a turbomachine including a shaft bearing including at least one axially displaceable thrust bearing. The axially displaceable thrust bearing configured to axially displace a rotating component relative to a stationary component to control the clearance therebetween. The system further including a plurality of actuators coupled to the at least one axially displaceable thrust bearing and configured to actuate the at least one axially displaceable thrust bearing to control the clearance. The plurality of actuators is configured to deactivate a diametrically opposed actuator in the event of an actuator failure to maintain zero moment. In a topography network, each diametrically opposed actuator pair is coupled to a single control line. In an alternate topography network, alternating actuators are coupled to a single control line. In addition, a method of actuating a thrust bearing to control clearance in a turbomachine is disclosed.
Abstract:
An inter-stage seal for a turbomachine includes a sealing member extending from a first end to a second end through an intermediate portion having a sealing surface, a first mounting member extending from a first end portion coupled to the sealing member adjacent the first end to a second, cantilevered end portion having a first rotor mounting element, and a second mounting member extending from a first end portion coupled to the sealing member adjacent the second end to a second, cantilevered end portion having a second rotor mounting element.

Abstract:
A blade includes an airfoil, a stationary portion coupled to a radially inner end of the airfoil, and a leakage flow guide vane assembly coupled to the stationary portion. The leakage flow guide vane assembly includes a plurality of passages defined therein. The passages are oriented to induce a swirl velocity to a working fluid flowing through the passages.
