In a specific embodiment, the invention is concerned with determining the actions to be taken when a foreign body impact has been detected, for example on a fan blade.Accordingly, the invention provides a method to take one or more FOD detection apparatus, analyse the likely (probabilistic) outcome, and provide a system to determine subsequent action that assures safety whilst minimising operational disruption.This invention provides a method and apparatus to identify FOD or bird impact to gas turbine fan blades, assessing the damage that may have occurred whist still in flight and determining post impact actions, including replacement parts.

    摘要: A system controls net thrust of a steam turbine having a stepped rotating shaft. A first leak off line fluidly couples a first stage of a turbine section to a packing near a stepped portion on the rotating shaft. A second leak off line fluidly couples a second stage of the turbine section that has a pressure different from the first stage to a step area immediately adjacent to the stepped portion, and a connection line fluidly couples the first leak off line to the second leak off line. The lines include control valves such that a controller can actively control the net thrust by regulating thrust pressure on the stepped portion using steam from the first and second stages of the turbine section. The controller may also prevent damage to an active retractable seal using the control valves.

    摘要: A method for controlling distortion of a turbine case (“case”) includes measuring a temperature distribution for the case that includes thermal gradients. The method further includes modeling thermal stresses on the case induced by the thermal gradients, calculating an out of roundness index (“index”) resulting from the thermal stresses, and comparing the index with at least one distortion limit to determine whether the case has a satisfactory or an unsatisfactory index. The temperature distribution is controlled for an unsatisfactory index to produce the satisfactory index. A system for controlling distortion of the turbine case includes a thermal measurement system, for measuring the temperature distribution, and a computer configured for modeling the thermal stresses, calculating and comparing the index with the distortion limit, and controlling the temperature distribution for an unsatisfactory index to produce the satisfactory index.

    摘要: A load transfer arrangement is provided to act as a stabiliser for utilisation in centring rotational instabilities which may occur in rotor devices such as those within a gas turbine engine. By providing a fixed screw thread path which comprises a groove having channels and having constrictions and which define clearance crowns an acceptable eccentricity range it is possible to slow screw thread driving motion and therefore load transfer only to the positions where the rotational eccentricity enters tapers leading to the constrictions. In such circumstances an orbit thread is then progressively brought into confinement and continuous engagement with a fixed screw thread defined by crowns of channels of the fixed screw thread path defined by the continuous groove through the channels. In such circumstances wide eccentricity is allowed initially but as rotational speed reduces greater and more continuous driving motions are provided whilst avoiding excessive loading during early stage operation. High loads on final rundown contact are controlled by a diaphragm mount, the whole serving to restore the support stiffness of the rotor post fusing.
