摘要:
In a nuclear reactor core having fuel assemblies with upper and lower end fittings, a debris filter plate is attached to a lower end fitting having a skirt. The filter prevents debris from entering the fuel assembly, while the skirt prevents the trapped debris from sliding off the lower end fitting and continuing into the core. The lower end fitting is formed from a substantially square base and has flow channels to allow coolant to flow through it to the fuel assembly. The skirt is an extension of the metal of the lower end fitting that extends around the perimeter of the lower end fitting, spanning all four corners of the lower end fitting. In addition to capturing debris, the skirt also positions the filter, which may be manufactured from the same metal as the lower end fitting.

A fuel assembly includes a plurality of fuel rods comprising fissile material, a plurality of guide tubes interspersed amongst the fuel rods, an upper end fitting connected with upper ends of guide tubes, and a lower end fitting. End plugs are connected with the lower ends of the guide tubes. The end plugs have threaded male shafts extending from the lower ends of the guide tubes which pass through openings of the lower end fitting. Female lock nuts are threaded onto the threaded male shafts of the end plugs and lock with the lower end fitting to secure the lower end fitting to the lower ends of the guide tubes. The female lock nuts suitably have locking portions that are outwardly deformed into recesses of the lower end fitting to lock the lock nuts in place after tightening.

A control rod assembly including at least one movable control rod including a neutron absorbing material, a control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) for controlling movement of the at least one control rod, and a coupling operatively connecting the at least one control rod and the CRDM. The coupling includes a terminal element engaged with a connecting rod of the CRDM and the at least one moveable control rod, and a kinetic energy absorbing element supported by the terminal element for absorbing kinetic energy during a SCRAM event, the kinetic energy absorbing element configured to act between the terminal element and an upper plate of an associated fuel assembly.

A nuclear fuel assembly having a parallel array of elongated fuel elements supported between an upper and lower nozzle. Main support grids are substantially evenly spaced along the elongated dimension of the assembly to maintain the spacing between fuel elements. A plurality of auxiliary vibration-resistant grids respectively positioned between the main support grids in the middle third elongated dimension of the fuel elements, that are smaller in height and provide a larger fuel element contact area than the main support grids.

A nuclear propulsion reactor. A pressure vessel is provided with a reactor core that is surrounded by a radial reflector. Nuclear fuel elements in the core are formed from a hexagonal housing made from a high performance moderator and having a plurality of axial bores that extend the full length of the housing. A stack of nuclear fuel compacts having axial bores for coolant flow is received in the central axial bore of the housing. Hollow lithium hydride slugs are received in the bores at the corners of the housing. A rocket nozzle is attached to one end of the pressure vessel. Coolant/propellant flows into a passageway around the rocket nozzle for cooling thereof, upward through bores in the reflector and through the hexagonal housings of the fuel elements, downward through the bores in the nuclear fuel compacts and then out the rocket nozzle where propulsive thrust is produced.

In nuclear reactor fuel assembly of the floating grid type, a spacer grid insert positioned concentrically about the central instrument guide tube prevents damage to instrument guide tube saddles caused by axial load, while permitting limited movement of the spacer grids.

A spacer grid includes intersecting straps defining cells with springs and dimples arranged to hold fuel rods passing through the cells. The direction of the springs switches at a switch point in the spacer grid that is not at the center of the spacer grid. The intersecting straps may include a first set of mutually parallel straps including a first transition strap and a second set of mutually parallel straps including a second transition strap, with the second set intersecting the first set. The springs of the first set of mutually parallel straps face away from the first transition strap, and the springs of the second set of mutually parallel straps face away from the second transition strap. The outer straps in some embodiments include dimples but not springs.

A technique is provided for engaging and disengaging burnable poison rods from the spider in a fuel assembly. The cap on the end of each of the burnable poison rods is provided with a shank that is received in the respective bore formed in the spider. In one illustrative embodiment, the shank is deformed to firmly secure the rod and attached shank in the spider bore. Pressing the shank in the direction of the bore axis overcomes the deformation to release the particular rod from the spider.

A retainer to provide supplemental holddown force for a control component assembly latched into a fuel assembly of a nuclear reactor. Upon failure of latching mechanism the retainer precludes the ejection of the control component assembly from the fuel assembly by the upward coolant flow drage force. The spring loaded retainer is mounted at the top of the control component assembly and engages both the control component assembly and the core grid plate to form a structural blocking of the grid plate hole thereby precluding the ejection of the control component assembly therethrough.
