In a magnetic recording control device, a plurality of test signals of different frequencies are recorded on and reproduced from a magnetic recording medium, and the reproduction levels of the test signals are detected. From the detection results, the frequency characteristics and electro-magnetic conversion characteristics of the magnetic recording medium are judged. A frequency correction in accordance with the judged frequency characteristics, and a record level correction in accordance with the judged electro-magnetic conversion characteristics are conducted on a video signal to be recorded.

Phase adjusting circuits, which adjust the timing of the changing edge of the sustaining pulse, are provided for the sustaining circuit; the power recovery circuit is of improved efficiency; and power consumption is reduced by optimizing the timing of a changing edge of the sustaining pulse The circuit devices used in the sustaining circuits are classified according to delay times and sets of the circuit devices are selected so that the timing of a changing edge of the sustaining pulse falls within a predetermined allowance, and the selected sets of the circuit devices are set to the PDP.

Alternatively, discharge electrodes having transparent electrodes and capable of discharging between their respective neighboring electrodes on both sides are arranged on the inner side of the front substrate. The front substrate is provided on the side of the display surface where discharge-generated light radiates out to the exterior. Shielding parts for shielding incident light from the exterior are formed on the transparent electrodes, or along the front substrate. Accordingly, the shielding parts reduce the surface reflection to improve the bright room contrast ratio. Forming the shielding parts with the same material as that of the bus electrodes prevents fabrication processes from becoming complicated. The areas of the shielding parts can be varied with the luminescent colors of cells, to change the luminescent brightness by the cell.

The pulse of the first voltage is so set that it is higher than a first discharge start voltage, a third voltage caused by the discharge is higher than the first discharge start voltage, and the first, second, and third electrodes have the same potential after the application of the pulse of the first voltage. Therefore, an address discharge of the surface discharge plasma display panel can be caused by a wide range of voltages, and display quality of the panel can be improved.
