This invention concerns a process for fabricating fiber reinforced thermoset resin articles. The process comprises the steps of (a) providing in a distributing zone, an intimate mixture of one or more fibers with a melting point or a glass transition temperature above about 130.degree. C. and a fiber length greater than about 0.5 centimeters, and a liquid resin, said resin having a viscosity of less than about 3000 centipoise at 25.degree. C., (b) injecting said mixture into the cavity of a closed matched metal die mold, thereby filling said cavity with said mixture, (c) heating said mixture so as to cause an exothermic reaction to occur in said mold, and (d) opening said mold and recovering a thermoset fiber reinforced molded article therefrom.

TRXLPE-type cable sheaths are prepared by a method in which a solid polymer is mixed with a liquid water tree-resistant agent either by dosing or direct injection. In the dosing method, the solid polymer, e.g., high pressure LDPE, is sprayed or otherwise contacted with the liquid agent, e.g., PEG, the agent is allowed to absorb into the polymer, and the polymer with absorbed agent is then fed to an extrusion apparatus for extrusion over a sheathed or unsheathed wire or optic fiber. In the direct injection method, the solid polymer is first fed to an extrusion apparatus, and the liquid agent is sprayed or otherwise contacted with the polymer before the two are blended with one another through the action of the mixing elements of the apparatus.

A process for grafting an anhydride of an unsaturated aliphatic diacid onto a polyolefin comprising:(a) passing molten polyolefin through at least two injection zones connected in series;(b) injecting, under grafting conditions, a portion of a solution comprising the anhydride, an organic peroxide catalyst, and an inert organic solvent into the molten polyolefin as it passes through each injection zone, and mixing same in each injection zone until the portion is at least partially grafted onto the polyolefin; and(c) passing the grafted polyolefin, in the molten state, into a devolatilization zone, and mixing same in said zone, under devolatilization conditions, until the grafted polyolefin is essentially devolatilized.

Shear thickening compositions can function in an energy or communications transmission cable to provide enhanced protection against externally applied forces, e.g., cutting or puncture from a shovel. As a free or bound layer, or when used via impregnation into a substrate used for an internal component or wrap, the shear thickening composition provides protection against mechanical damage that far surpasses conventional technologies. In foamable compositions for cable components, the shear thickening composition provides enhanced integrity of the polymer melt for enhanced foam performance. As a flame retardant component, the shear thickening composition provides an enhanced char formation mechanism for superior flame retardance.

A process is disclosed for the production of injection molded thermoplastic articles having reduced combustibility comprising: maintaining a mold cavity at a pre-selected back pressure sufficiently high to substantially prevent foaming of a thermoplastic melt to be injected therein; injecting thermoplastic melt into said mold cavity under a pressure in excess of said back pressure to fill said mold cavity; said thermoplastic melt containing from about 50 to 70% by weight of alumina trihydrate and from about 1 to 12% by weight of water as a liquid processing aid.
