    Abstract: A coupling-in optical arrangement is configured for coupling light waves into a light-waves transmitting substrate by total internal reflection. The light-waves transmitting substrate has at least a first major external surface and a second major external surface. At least one of the first or second major external surfaces is coated with a coating that compensates for non-uniformity of the light-waves transmitting substrate. The light-waves transmitting substrate is formed from a plurality of transparent plates interleaved with a plurality of optical elements such that the transparent plates and the optical elements alternate along the light-waves transmitting substrate. Each of the transparent plates is coated with a partially reflecting coating, thereby forming a plurality of partially reflecting surfaces, which are configured for coupling light waves out of the light-waves transmitting substrate.

    Abstract: An optical system includes a light-transmitting substrate having at least two external major surfaces and edges and an optical element for coupling light waves into the substrate, by total internal reflection. At least one partially reflecting surface is located in the substrate for coupling light waves out of the substrate, and at least one transparent layer, having a refractive index substantially lower than the refractive index of the light transmitting substrate is optically attached to at least one of the major surfaces of the substrate, defining an interface plane. The light waves coupled inside the substrate are substantially totally reflected from the interface plane between the major surface of the substrate and the transparent layer.

    Abstract: An optical device, including a light waves-transmitting substrate has two major surfaces and edges, optical means for coupling light into the substrate by total internal reflection, and a plurality of partially reflecting surfaces (22a, 22b) carried by the substrate.
