Abstract: A woven structure includes thermoelectric ribbons interwoven with thread. Each thermoelectric ribbon includes a matrix of thermoelectric elements, the matrix having an insulating substrate that supports plural rows of thermoelectric elements, a plurality of conductive elements, and two terminals. The conductive elements form a series connection of the thermoelectric elements between the two terminals. A set of first conductive elements have a first temperature and a set of second conductive contacts have a second temperature lower than the first temperature when a first current flows in a first direction between the first matrix terminal and the second matrix terminal. The matrix is configured to form spaced-apart alternating stacks of the first conductive contacts and second conductive contacts. Each length of the yard or thread is interwoven such that it passes alternately under stacks of first conductive contacts and over stacks of second conductive contacts.

Abstract: An outerwear garment includes a jacket, at least one thermoelectric module, a thermal spreading pad and a mesh cover. The jacket has a flexible garment layer conforming to all or part of the human torso. The thermoelectric module (TEM) is coupled to the garment layer and has first and second sides. The TEM provides a temperature change between the first side and the second side responsive to applied electrical operating power. The thermal spreading pad has a surface thermally coupled and substantially conforming to at least a portion of the human torso, and exchanges heat with the first side of the TEM. The flexible mesh cover is coupled to the garment layer and disposed over the TEM. The jacket also supports an electrical power source that provides electrical operating power to the TEM.

Abstract: A thin-film thermoelectric generator including flexible base film substrate having a longitudinal direction and a transverse direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction. Thermoelectric (TE) elements are located on the base film substrate. The TE elements arranged in columns oriented along the longitudinal direction of the base film substrate and rows oriented along the transverse direction of the base film substrate. Line grooves are located between at least portion of the rows of the TE elements and extending across the base film substrate in the transverse direction to provide flexibility to the thin-film thermoelectric generator.

Abstract: A system for applying thermal therapy includes a portable housing and at least one conduit supportable in proximity to body tissue, the conduit having an inlet end and outlet end. The housing supports at least one thermoelectric module, a power storage unit, a pump, a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet. The fluid inlet and fluid outlet are to the inlet and outlet of the conduit. The pump is operably connected to pump fluid from the fluid inlet to the fluid outlet. The at least one thermoelectric module is coupled to generate a thermal change in fluid disposed between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet. The power storage unit is operably coupled to provide operating power to the pump and the at least one thermoelectric module.

Abstract: A low heat flux flexible thermoelectric generator woven with semiconducting strings. The thermoelectric strings have a repeated structure of (metal)-(p-type semiconductor)-(metal)-(n-type semiconductor) materials and are formulated with a continuous structure forming a module. In this woven structure, the thermoelectric strings are the warp threads and the insulator strings are the weft yarns. The p-type and n-type stripes are aligned to the same dimensions. A metal terminal at the end of the strings provides the electrical connections in a series with a serpentine pattern. Two electrically insulating films laminated on the top and bottom of this woven structure conduct the surface heat to the metal junctions on both the hot and cold sides. The small fill factor (low fractional area coverage of the thermoelectric leg) creates a high internal thermal resistance that is better matched to low heat flux sources such as human body for harvesting the maximum power output.

Abstract: A thermoelectric module includes two insulating substrates supporting a plurality of thermoelectric fingers. Each thermoelectric finger has alternating strips of n-type doped material and p-type doped material, wherein adjacent n-type doped strips and p-type doped strips are separated by and electrically coupled to conductive regions. The thermoelectric fingers run in a first direction and are spaced apart from each other. A plurality of holes in the insulating substrates are disposed between adjacent thermoelectric fingers, and area aligned with each other. A length of fabric yarn woven is in and out of substantially aligned holes in each substantially aligned set of holes.
