Abstract:
A composition, suitable for use as an adhesive upon addition of a hardening agent comprises (1) a glycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol (many specified), if desired in admixture with other epoxy compounds, and (2) a comminuted amphoteric oxide, e.g. the oxides of zinc, antimony, lead, aluminium, tin, iron or silicon or bauxite; the amount of oxide being 50-125 per cent by weight of all the epoxy constituents present. Other epoxy constituents specified are the glycidyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols (many specified) and liquid monoepoxy compounds, e.g. propylene-, butylene-, isobutylene-, butadiene-, 1,2-pentylene-, 2,3-hexylene-, 3,4-hexylene-, 3-ethyl-2,3-pentylene-, octylene-, styrene-, and decylene-oxides; epibromhydrin and epichlorhydrin; and methyl-, ethyl-, isopropyl-, allyl-, crotyl-, isoamyl-phenyl-, ortho tolyl-, para tolyl-, thymyl-, and naphthyl-glycidyl ethers. Hardening agents exemplified are alkalies and alkali phenoxides; carboxylic acids and anhydrides; metal halides and complexes thereof with ethers, acid anhydrides, ketones and diazonium salts; phosphoric acid and esters thereof; and amino compounds. In examples: (a) epoxy resin I is prepared by reacting 1 mol. of bis-phenol with 2.6 mols. of epichlorhydrin in presence of caustic soda; (b) epoxy resin II is prepared by reacting 1 mol. of bis-phenol and 2.0 mols. of epichlorhydrin in presence of caustic soda; (e) epoxy resin III is prepared by reacting 3 mols. of glycerine with 9 mols. of epichlorhydrin in presence of a diethyl ether solution of boron trifluoride to form a condensate which is dissolved in dioxane and heated with sodium aluminate. Tables disclose compositions of (1) epoxy resins I and III, zinc or aluminium oxide and diethylene triamine; (2) and (3) epoxy resins I and III, allyl glycidyl ether, alumina and triethylamine; (4) epoxy resins I and III, butadiene or propylene oxide, bauxite triethylamine; (5) epoxy resins I and III, allyl glycidyl ether, alumina and triethylamine or diethylamine triamine. Specifications 657,816, 681,001, 681,991 and 13838/48 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91), are referred to.
