Abstract: There is provided a sample preparation device comprising a sample preparation vessel and a bead manipulation mechanism for manipulating sample preparation beads in the vessel. The bead manipulation mechanism comprises: one or more magnets arranged to produce a magnetic field for manipulating, in use, one or more beads in the vessel. Each magnet is attached to a support frame by a biasing support arranged to support the magnet in contact against an outer surface of the vessel such that the magnet maintains contact with the vessel during relative movement between the magnets and the vessel.

Abstract: There are provided sample analysis cartridges, and methods and systems using such sample analysis cartridges, wherein the sample analysis cartridges comprise a reaction chamber configured to receive a sample; a film defining at least a portion of a face of the reaction chamber; an inlet port fluidly connected to an inlet of the reaction chamber and an outlet port fluidly connected to an outlet of the reaction chamber; and an air reservoir fluidly connected to the reaction chamber; the inlet port, outlet port and air reservoir arranged such that, as the reaction chamber is filled with fluid through the inlet port, gas within the reaction chamber may escape the cartridge through the outlet port whilst gas within the air reservoir is retained; the inlet port, outlet port and air reservoir being further arranged such that such that, if the inlet and outlet ports are sealed, gas within the air reservoir applies pressure on the contents of the reaction chamber.

Abstract: A sample preparation cartridge for use with a sample preparation device, the cartridge includes a housing defining plural separate segments, at least one of said segments comprising a fixed section of a pipette component; and a moveable head comprising a pipette tip, the head being configured, in use, to be moved between a position in which the pipette tip is in sealed engagement with the fixed section of pipette component and a position in which pipette tip is positioned adjacent to another of said plural segments. With the present invention a disposable sample preparation cartridge and corresponding analytical reader can be provided in a very cost effective and simple manner whilst still ensuring high quality sample preparation for analysis.
