摘要: A projector has a liquid crystal display panel for displaying an image, a lamp for illuminating the liquid crystal display panel, and a projection optical system for projecting light modulated by the image displayed. The lamp is held by a member whose position is variable to allow fitting of different types of lamp. The projector acquires data related to the lamp currently fitted and controls the light emission of the lamp on the basis of that data. The data includes the life of the lamp, so that the projector prevents the lamp to be lit longer than its remaining life. The remaining life is updated in accordance with how long the lamp has been lit. In addition to the lamp that is lit, an auxiliary lamp may be fitted so that the lamp that is lit can be switched to the auxiliary lamp as required. The lamp is formed into a single lamp unit together with a reflector or a casing to prevent the user from touching the lamp. The lamp is accessible for replacement only when it is in a predetermined position, where the lamp is never allowed when hot.

摘要: A display optical apparatus is provided with: a polarizing plate transmitting illuminating light having a predetermined polarization direction; a reflective liquid crystal display device reflecting the illuminating light transmitted by the polarizing plate as projected light of a polarization condition that differs according to pixel information for each pixel; and a phase plate changing the polarization conditions of the illuminating light and the projected light and directing the illuminating light and the projected light to the polarizing plate. The phase plate is disposed between the reflective liquid crystal display device and the polarizing plate. The black level of the projected light is adjusted by rotating the principal axis direction of the phase plate.

摘要: A projector, which projects color images using the three liquid crystal panels (41-43) while cooling them by the fans (611-613) for G, R, and B panels, comprises the level calculation unit (711) for finding the intensity levels of the R, G, and B components of image signals, the level calculation unit (721) for finding the voice levels of voice signals, the fan control unit (73) for controlling the numbers of revolutions of the fans (611-613), and the memory (761) for storing the cumulative amount of lighting time of the lamp (21). As the intensity levels get higher, the numbers of revolutions of the fans are increased, and as the cumulative amount of lighting time becomes larger, the numbers of revolutions of the fans are decreased. As a result, unnecessary noises caused by the fans (611-613) can be reduced while the liquid crystal panels (41-43) are properly cooled. Thus, the present invention has an object of reducing the noise of the fan which cools the display devices such as liquid crystal panels in a projector. Thus, the object of the present invention is to realize a reduction in noise caused by the fan for cooling a display device such as liquid crystal panels in a projector.

摘要: An illumination system has a light source for emitting illumination light, a color wheel, a first deflecting member, and a second deflecting member. The color wheel transmits or reflects the illumination light while rotating about a rotation axis in such a way that illumination light exiting from the color wheel has colors that are switched sequentially with time. The first deflecting member deflects the illumination light in such a way that the illumination light enters the color wheel. The second deflecting member deflects the illumination light having exited from the color wheel. The illumination light entering the first deflecting member and the illumination light exiting from the second deflecting member are both substantially perpendicular to the rotation axis of the color wheel.

摘要: A projector includes a duct having a connecting end for connection to an air inlet provided in a housing, and an air intake end for drawing in outside air for cooling the interior of the projector. The duct is made of a soft or flexible material and is capable of altering its shape. Thus, the duct can change the position of the air intake end in space, for example, to different positions. Further, the duct is pivotable on a pivot axis, and thus can change the opening direction of the air intake end circumferentially about the pivot axis. Therefore, selection of the position and/or opening direction of the air intake end so as to draw in the outside air suitable for cooling the interior depending on the usage forms of the projector achieves efficient cooling of the interior of the projector.

摘要: The rotation axis of each mirror of a DMD (4) defines an angle of 45° with respect to long and short sides of a rectangular image display area. A polarization conversion optical system (24) makes a polarization direction of light from a light source (1) arranged in one direction and projects the arranged light, and after total reflection from the critical surface (31b) of a TIR prism (3), the light is guided to the DMD (4). When the incident surface of the critical surface (31b) and the mirror incident surface of the DMD (4) are in parallel with each other, a PBS prism array of the polarization conversion optical system (24) carries out the polarization and separation of the light from the light source (1) in a direction corresponding to the long side direction of the image display area of the DMD (4) in the case of the separation of the light from the light source (1) into two linear polarizations having different polarization directions. A polarization control means makes the two linear polarizations after the polarization and separation arranged in parallel or vertical polarization directions with respect to the incident surface of the critical surface (31b) and projects the same. Thus, a polarization condition of the light for illuminating the DMD (4) can be prevented from falling into disorder at a reflecting surface in the optical path, so that a light amount of the projection image can be prevented from reducing.
