Abstract:
A manager program for managing virtual machines includes a process which receives a notification message indicating an occurrence of an event affecting a data storage unit in a data storage system that supports a shared file system. The notification message might have come from a virtual machine host or resulted from a hardware reconfiguration. The manager program then determines whether another virtual machine host is sharing the data storage unit. The manager program might make this determination by polling each of the virtual machine hosts it manages or by checking information previously collected and stored in a database. If another virtual machine host is sharing the data storage unit, the manager program sends a refresh message to that virtual machine host that causes the virtual machine host to update information relating to the data storage unit in a cache associated with the virtual machine host.
Abstract:
An example method of migrating a virtualized computing instance between source and destination virtualized computing systems includes executing a first migration workflow in the source virtualized computing system, where a host computer executing the virtualized computing instance is a source host in the first migration workflow and a first mobility agent simulates a destination host in the first migration workflow. The method further includes executing a second migration workflow in the destination virtualized computing system, where a second mobility agent in the destination virtualized computing system simulates a source host in the second migration workflow and a host computer in the destination virtualized computing system is a destination host in the second migration workflow. The method further includes transferring, during execution of the first and second migration workflows, migration data including the virtualized computing instance between the first mobility agent and the second mobility agent over a network.
Abstract:
A datastore for a virtual machine that can be executed on a host computer networked to a physical storage system is allocated by a server. The server generates a unique identifier to associate with the datastore, wherein the unique identifier mimics a form of identifier that is generated by the physical storage system to identify volumes of physical storage in the physical storage system that are accessible to the host computer. At least one volume of physical storage in the physical storage system having physical storage available to satisfy the request to allocate the datastore is identified and the server maintains a mapping of the unique identifier to the at least one volume of physical storage and provides the mapping to the host computer upon running the virtual machine, thereby enabling the host computer to store data for the datastore in the at least one volume of physical storage.

Abstract:
A method and software is described for recreating on a target datastore a set of hierarchical files that are present on a source datastore. A content identifier (ID) is maintained for each component of the set of hierarchical files. The content ID of a component is updated when its contents are modified. The child component is copied from the source datastore to the target datastore. The content ID corresponding to the parent component on the source datastore is compared with content IDs corresponding to files present on the target datastore. When a matching content ID is discovered, it infers a copy of the parent component. The matching file on the target datastore is associated with the copied child component so that the matching file becomes a new parent component to the copied child component, thereby recreating the set of hierarchical files on the target.
Abstract:
A method for migrating a virtual machine (VM) includes establishing a first connection to a first cloud computing system executing a first VM, and establishing a second connection to a second cloud computing system managed by a second cloud provider, which is different form the first cloud provider. The method further includes instantiating a second VM designated as a destination VM in the second cloud computing system, and installing a migration agent on each of the first VM and the second VM. The migration agents execute a migration process of the first VM to the second VM by (1) iteratively copying guest data from the first VM to the second VM until a switchover criteria of the migration operation is met, and (2) copying a remainder of guest data from the first VM to the second VM when the switchover criteria is met.
Abstract:
Examples perform live migration of virtual machines (VM) from a source host to a destination host. The live migration performs time-consuming operations before the source host is stunned, reducing the downtime apparent to users. Some examples contemplate pre-copying memory from the source VM to the destination VM, and the opening of disks on the destination VM before stunning the source VM.
