Centers (94) of handgrips (82A and 82B) are disposed longitudinally intermediate of the first and second wheels (16A and 16B) and the third wheel (24A) to minimize danger of the wheeled apparatus (10) tipping backwardly when used as a wheeled walker. A negative camber angle of the first and second wheels (16A and 16B) minimizes danger of the wheeled apparatus (10) tipping sideways, and an asymmetrical folding mechanism (15 or 256) reduces or removes the negative camber angle when the foldable frame (12 or 258) is folded, thereby minimizing the required size of a shipping container.

A caster wheel mounting assembly mounted on each bottom member can include a caster wheel mount having two spaced apart forks for receiving a caster wheel, a stem connected to the caster wheel mount, a caster sleeve in which the stem is positioned, and a bearing disposed between the caster sleeve and the stem for allowing rotational movement of the caster sleeve relative to the stem and the caster wheel mount. To adjust the seat pan angle, the rear end of each bottom member can be curved upwardly and provided with a plurality of holes arranged along an arc having a center of curvature that corresponds to the pivot connection between the seat mounting member and the footrest member.

A number of pairs of plug-in chamber angle adjustment plugs are provided having preset angled bores for selection of a desired camber angle for the wheels of the wheelchair. The preset angles are embodies in cylindrical bores longitudinally disposed in the plugs, the bores attached or formed within the plugs at the desired camber angle and so positioned as to compensate for the change in wheelbase which would normally result from changing the camber angle. The stationary axle of the wheel is received and secured within the angled bore. The plugs bear a pattern of holes that may only be inserted in one alignment to attach to a mating pattern of holes in mounting plates formed in the rcesses in the sides of the chassis of the wheelchair. Alternatively, the mounting plate may have a keyway for attaching the plugs. Conventional screws are used to further secure the plugs within recesses in the chassis of the wheelchair.

By adjusting two telescoping-type interengaging shiftable parts for each of two frame bars (3,4) of a support frame (2) of a lightweight wheelchair (1), the sitting position of the same can be adjusted with respect to the seat surface (5) and with it the adjustment of the center of gravity can be dynamically adjusted with respect to the user. Additional adjustment possibilities by means of each support element (17) at the right and left sides of the seat surface (5) with respect to the rear axle as well as corresponding clamping devices for the front wheels (9,10) on the frame (2) allow a very precise user-compatibility in this lightweight wheel chair. Additionally a backrest (6) can be collapsed with respect to the seat surface (5) by means of handles (20) pivotally connected with the frame bars, to thereby permit the lightweight wheelchair (1) to be compactly folded up for transportation purposes.
