摘要: The core element for a guidewire comprises a proximal stainless steel portion and a distal nitinol portion. The distal nitinol portion comprises a proximal segment of an at least partially linear elastic nitinol and a distal segment of a super elastic nitinol. The proximal end of a first spring coil contacts the super elastic nitinol with the first spring coil distal end being proximal the distal end of the distal segment of the super elastic nitinol. A second spring coil has a proximal portion that contacts the first spring coil distal end at a spring coil connection. Further, the second spring coil extends distally to an atraumatic tip. Extending radially from a longitudinal axis of the core wire, the first and second spring coils are spaced from and circumferentially unsupported by the distal nitinol core portion at the spring coil connection.

摘要: A temperature-controlled actuator has a housing (12) with a proximal end and a moveable distal portion. A core-wire (16) extends along the housing, with its distal section anchored to the distal portion of the housing. The core-wire's distal section has an austenite state and a martensite state. The distal section moves the distal portion by transitioning between the austenite and martensite states in response to a temperature change along a thermometric section (22, 24) of the core-wire. A proximal section in mechanical communication with the core-wire's distal section transmits tension, provided by a tensioning element (20), to the distal section. The tensioning element, which is coupled to the proximal section of the core-wire, constantly applies a tensioning force to the core-wire.

摘要: Guide wire for use in a medical procedure and for use with a power supply comprising a solid core wire having proximal and distal extremities. The proximal extremity has a predetermined diameter. At least a portion of the distal extremity has a reduced size with respect to the predetermined diameter. A flexible coil is secured to the distal extremity of the core wire and extends over the portion of the core wire having a reduced size. An actuator member is disposed proximal of the coil and extends along the core wire. Electrical conductors extend from the proximal extremity of the core wire to the actuator member for supplying heat to the actuator member. The actuator member is formed of a temperature activated metal alloy having a Young's modulus of 4.times.10.sup.6 to 14.times.10.sup.6 psi which increases in stiffness when heat is supplied thereto to increase the stiffness of the guide wire proximally of the coil.

摘要: A guidewire navigable through body vessels of a human subject for delivery of a catheter or the like is provided. The guidewire has a tube which receives a corewire that protrudes beyond a distal portion of the tube. The protruding portion of the corewire is surrounded by a spring and shapeable into a curve or arc. The cross-sectional shape of the spring may be varied in order to promote bending flexibility and curvature or to favor curvature of a chosen type. The corewire is axially movable with respect to the tube, which compresses or stretches the spring to change the stiffness of the spring. The tube has a proximal portion comprised of a relatively rigid material, such as stainless steel, while a distal portion is comprised of a more flexible material, such as a nitinol.

摘要: A guide wire having a distal extremity with an adjustable support characteristic comprising a core wire having proximal and distal extremities. The distal extremity has a reduced cross sectional area which is more flexible than the proximal extremity. A tip secured to the distal extremity of the core wire. A sleeve of superelastic material is disposed coaxially on the distal extremity of the core wire. The sleeve is annealed so that it is relatively flexible at a temperature ranging from 20.degree. to 40.degree. C. and becomes progressively stiffer as temperature increases. The core wire conducts electrical energy to the superelastic sleeve to supply heat to the sleeve and extends from the proximal extremity of the core wire to the sleeve to cause the sleeve to become stiffer to thereby increase the stiffness of the distal extremity of the guide wire. A guide wire is provided having a distal extremity with an adjustable support characteristic which varies from a floppy characteristic to a stiff characteristic.

摘要: Rapidly inserted central catheters (“RICC”), and methods thereof. A RICC can include a catheter tube including a first section in a distal-end portion of the catheter tube, a second section in the distal-end portion of the catheter tube proximal of the first section, and a junction between the first and second sections of the catheter tube. The first section of the catheter tube can be formed of a first material having a first durometer. The second section of the catheter tube can be formed of a second material having a second durometer less than the first durometer. The first and second sections of the catheter tube can have a column strength sufficient to prevent buckling of the catheter tube when inserted into an insertion site and advanced through a vasculature of a patient.
