摘要:
This invention relates to a machine for franking mail items, comprising means for printing postal indicia on a mail item, means for detecting the position of this mail item along a path of travel of this item and control means linked to said detection means and to said printing means for proceeding with printing postal indicia on said mail item at a predetermined place, and means for acquisition and processing of an image of such printed postal indicia so as to determine the conformity thereof with respect to at least one predetermined reference image. These image acquisition and processing means comprise in particular means for determining a lack of registration of said printed postal indicia.

A method of printing a report sheet using a printer of a postage meter in which the printer is capable of printing only in a print field smaller than required to print the report sheet and in which first and seconfd edges of the sheet are required to be located at predetermined positions is described in which printing of the report sheet is effected in a sequence of printing operations and the report sheet is folded in such a manner as to permit an area thereof intended to receive an imprint in the print field of the printer.

The invention relates to a franking machine comprising an inkjet printing unit with two printing heads (301A, 301B), for printing on flat posted objects which can be inserted or run through the unit, such as letters or postcards. Said machine further comprises a guide piece (317), arranged around the print heads (301A, 301B) and projecting relative to the common jet opening plane thereof. A transport device for the posted objects is connected to said guide piece, with two drive rollers which, together with the guide piece, form a transport path and which are mounted before and after the print head, relative to the transport direction. The printing heads (301A, 301B) form a common jet opening plane and on the jet opening plane are rectangular in form, arranged at a steep angle to the direction of travel of the posted objects and mutually offset from each other.

In a postage printing device, a printer is employed to print postage indicia on mail pieces. The printer is preferably a noncontact printer such as an ink-jet printer. Printing occurs as the mail piece moves relative to the print head of the printer, which requires that reliable motion information (e.g. a print clock signal) be made available to the electronics driving the print head. The reliable motion is provided in a noncontact way, preferably by directing a laser beam toward the mail piece and detecting a moving speckle pattern in the light scattered from the mail piece.

A mail piece handler defines a paper path having a downstream direction. A first motor is mechanically coupled with the mail piece handler, and an encoder is operatively coupled with the mail piece handler. A mail piece sensor is positioned at the paper path, and a print rotor is positioned at the paper path downstream of the mail piece sensor, the print rotor having a print surface. A second motor is mechanically coupled with the print rotor, and an electronic controller is communicatively coupled with the encoder, with the mail piece sensor, and with the second motor, the controller disposed in the event of sensing of a mail piece by the mail piece sensor to control said second motor so as to cause the print surface of the print rotor to move at substantially a speed measured via the encoder.

This invention prevents the accounting unit of a postage meter from deducting funds when a mailpiece has been removed. The foregoing is achieved by giving the postage meter the intelligence to stop printing the postal indicia and deducting the value of the postal indicia just before the indicia is printed. This would eliminate the loss of funds due to problems between trip command and actual indicia printing. The apparatus of this invention utilizes a sensor to detect the presence of a mailpiece at a printing position and a detector to determine the location of the indicia printing plate or the time that an ink jet printer is going to print so that the system will be able to prevent the printing of a postal indicia and deducting the value of the postal indicia just before the indicia is printed.

A postage meter has a print rotor rotated by a motor and the motor is capable of being started and stopped under processor control. State variables are established within a nonvolatile memory. The rotor begins in its home position. When a mail piece such as a letter is detected by a letter sensor, the processor sets a state variable. At some point (either before loss of power, or after restoration of power) the postage value to be printed is booked into the accounting register. The rotor motor is started. At some point (either before loss of power, or after restoration of power) the rotor reaches its home position again. A state variable is cleared. In this way, it is possible, even after the loss and restoration of power, to distinguish between a rotor that is in its home position because it has not yet printed postage (but needs to do so) and a rotor that is in its home position because the printing of postage has been completed. Similarly it is possible, even after the loss and restoration of power, to distinguish between accounting registers that are quiescent because they have not yet had a postage amount booked, and registers that are quiescent because the booking of postage has been completed. The postage meter is thus quite unlikely to print postage that has not been booked, or book postage that does not get printed, even in the face of power losses at unpredictable times, and even in the absence of a large-capacity reserve power supply.

An apparatus for ensuring proper registration of a mailpiece in a feed path of a postage meter prior to printing includes a printing mechanism; detecting structure which detects first and second edges of the mailpiece in the feed path, the detecting structure initiating printing by the printing mechanism on the mailpiece at times when the first and second edges are concurrently detected in the feed path by the detecting structure and inhibiting printing by the printing mechanism at times when the first and second edges are not concurrently detected in the feed path by the detecting means. A method accomplishes the function of the apparatus.

An automated self-service mail processing and storing system is disclosed which is capable of receiving input from and providing instructions to a user via a touch-sensitive screen or a digitized voice system. The system is capable of weighing the mail item, receiving user identification information from a credit/debit card, for example, for payment, calculating the charge for shipment and deducting that amount from the user's charge account, and securely storing the item for subsequent pickup. The system contains a novel weighing means capable of detecting minute vibrations for purposes of obtaining an accurate weight amount. The system may also contain a tracking bar code generation means and a tracking bar code verification system. Optionally, a dual floppy disk system allows the user to send electronic mail, and a built-in facsimile apparatus allows the user to send "FAX" information through the telephone line. Also disclosed is a two-way communication means coupled between the mail processing and storing system computer and a remote computer station for providing such functions as credit authorization and charge reporting, transaction and tracking information transfers, error reporting, etc.

The mailing machine includes a print drum and shutter bar assemblies and a transport system for receiving seriately and assuming displacement control over envelopes from a feed means. The mailing machine drive control system is a microcomputer in control of a first stepper motor which is a driving communication with the transport system, a second motor in driving communication with the print drum assembly and a third motor in driving communication with the shutter bar assembly. A speed sensing means inform the microcomputer of the incoming velocity of an envelope and a trigger sensing means informs the microcomputer of the relative position of the envelope with respect to the transport system and printing station. The microcomputer is programmed to determine the peak drum speed relative to the speed of an incoming envelope and a preselected pitch distance between successive envelopes. Subsequent to the transport system assuming control over the envelope, the microcomputer causes the transport system to speed adjust to a speed equivalent to the peak drum speed and, further, subsequent to indicia printing by the postage meter print drum, causes the transport system to speed adjust to the previously determined IN-SPEED. The microcomputer causes the print drum and shutter bar to displace in a defined manner pursuant to a defined velocity profile under controlled accelerations such that the envelopes displacement relative to the printing station is synchronous with the peak drum speed for indicia printing by the print drum at the printing station.
