Abstract: An improved laser system is provided which increases laser efficiency, reduces power consumption and affords simplified construction. The improved laser, which can include any one of several electric pulsed systems, is capable of operating over an extended energy and duty cycle range. In operation only the electrical energy that contributes to the lasing action is drained from the energy source, thus greatly increasing the efficiency of the overall system. A mechanically biasable field effect electron emitter functions as either an active part of the laser or as an adjustable current controlling device, for controlling the period of lasing action.

Abstract: Apparatus for and a method of producing controlled discharges substantially throughout a large volume of a gaseous medium by generating in an enclosure a controlled density of free electrons in the medium and controlling the electron temperature of the free electrons to a level preventing a substantial increase in their density by a self-regenerative ionization process so that for a wide range of uniformity of both the density and temperature of the medium, a stable and controlled discharge is produced in the medium suitable for the intended use of the medium. Apparatus for and the method of producing a discharge in accordance with the invention is useful for the production of lasting action, electrically conductive ionized gas for use in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) devices and the like, or to produce or facilitate carrying out chemical processes such as, for example, the generation of ozone and the like.

Abstract: A method of performing Auger electron spectroscopic surface analysis, e.g. of silicon, in which the secondary electrons which leave the target material are analyzed without the use of an electron optic device. An a.c. signal modulated retard potential is applied in ramp form to the target and a detection circuit connected to the target measures the component of current to earth from the target at the second harmonic of the a.c. modulation signal. The output of the detection circuit is plotted as a function of the retard potential to produce a spectrum of the first derivative of the secondary electron energy with respect to the retard potential so as to enhance the display of Auger transitions. Alternative realizations are described of a circuit arrangement including a four-port network for coupling the target, a.c. modulation signal source, retard potential source, and detector circuit.
