摘要： A crimping tool is used to attach a metal hub plate to a plastic hub for a data storage disk. The hub is bonded to the data storage disk, and the metal hub plate allows the disk to be magnetically clamped to a spindle of a disk drive. The metal hub plate has a four tabs which are bent into respective recessed areas of the hub. The tool includes a plunger which is directed against the metal hub plate which the plate is held in a lower die assembly. The plunger includes four crimping jaws which slide against angled surfaces of the plunger. The sliding motion causes the crimping jaws to move radially inward towards each other. The lower surface of each jaw includes a cam surface and a prow. The cam surface slides against the tab, bending it to a predetermined shape, and then the prow contacts a base of the tab to bend it beyond the predetermined shape. In this way, the tabs, which are typically made of a resilient metal, are forced into the recessed areas and remain entirely within the recessed areas despite any spring-back that may occur after the bending has been completed.

摘要： A hemming machine for sheet metal is disclosed having a base adapted to be supported on a ground support surface. A cradle is vertically slidably mounted to the base while a nest is mounted to the cradle and adapted to support the part to be hemmed. Hemming tooling is mounted to the base and movable between an extended position in which the hemming tooling overlies the nest, and a retracted position in which the hemming tooling is spaced laterally outwardly from the nest. A pair of spaced ball screws are rotatably mounted to the base and threadably connected to the cradle on opposite sides of the nest so that rotation of the ball screws vertically displaces the cradle relative to the base. A single drive motor is drivingly connected through a two speed gear box to both ball screws to rotatably drive the ball screws in synchronism with each other.

摘要： A sheet metal hemming method and apparatus for securing inner and outer sheet metal panels together by forming a generally flat hem along respective peripheries of the two panels. A fixture receives and holds an outer sheet metal panel that is formed to include an upstanding border flange. An inner sheet metal panel is stacked on top of the outer panel. A hemming tool movably supported adjacent the fixture bends the upstanding border flange of the outer sheet metal panel over a periphery of the inner panel and into a position forming an acute angle relative to an underlying portion of the outer panel. The hemming tool also bends an outer portion of the border flange down onto the periphery of the inner panel and into a position over and generally parallel to the underlying portion of the outer sheet metal panel.

摘要： A tool for crimping a flanged vehicle door panel onto a door frame includes a pneumatic power unit that attaches to a crimping head unit. The head unit includes a rectangular housing with a circular aperture for attachment of a crimping head member. The rectangular housing also has an attached anvil portion that includes a central channel for holding a nylon pad. The crimping head member mounts above the anvil and nylon pad with a small amount of clearance there between. The head member has a leading edge that curves upwardly away from the nylon pad. In operation, the flanged door panel is positioned so the flange extends upwardly from the frame. The user moves the tool along the edge of the door frame with the crimping head member moving in a limited arc to incrementally crimp the flange tightly against the frame supported on the nylon pad as the tool moves along the edge of the work piece.
