A method at a workstation of a spinning machine or winding machine supplies an auxiliary thread from a thread nozzle to a suction assigned to the workstation, the auxiliary thread stretched between the thread nozzle and the suction. The auxiliary thread is severed to form a thread section protruding into the suction and a thread section extending into the thread nozzle, wherein the thread section protruding into the suction is carried away by the suction. The thread section extending into the thread nozzle is grasped with a thread receiver such that the thread section extending into the thread nozzle extends between the thread nozzle and the thread receiver. The thread section extending into the thread nozzle is severed to form a thread section remaining in the thread nozzle and a thread section coming from the thread receiver. The thread section coming from the thread receiver is transferred to the suction of the workstation. The thread section coming from the thread receiver is grasped with a capture arrangement adjacent a tube at the workstation prior to starting a process of winding the thread section coming from the thread receiver onto the tube.

Provided for a spinning machine, a roving bobbin changing apparatus which includes a roving end finding/pick-up section equipped with a roving end finding/pick-up mechanism at a leading side as viewed in a direction in which the roving bobbin changing apparatus is moved for roving bobbin exchange, and a roving tying/bobbin exchange section equipped with a roving bobbin exchanging means at a trailing side. Two parallel spun yarns (8, 8a) are wound onto a joint cross-wound bobbin (15) in the machine. If one of the yarns breaks (e.g. 8), the bobbin (15) and the supply of slivers (32, 32a) to the drafting arrangements (11, 11a) are stopped. An end of the unbroken yarn (8a) is taken up by a suction tube (69) and the broken end of the yarn (8) is wound up on the bobbin (15). The ends of the two yarns (8, 8a) are retrieved, reversely routed through the spinning units (12, 12a), the bobbin (15) and the draw-off device (14) are restarted and, the yarns (8, 8a) are deposited in and simultaneously withdrawn from the drafting arrangements (11, 11a) for joining therein with the end of restarted slivers (32, 32a). The sliver stoppers (30, 30a), however, are restarted at different times. In this manner, repair of a breakage in two yarns being jointly wound up on a common bobbin is achieved. During a subsequent twisting of the two yarns (8, 8a) to form a thread, the joined positions of the two yarns are offset along their lengths with respect to one another.

A method and apparatus for reestablishing the spinning operation at a spinning station of an open end spinning machine after a yarn break or after completion of winding of a full package. A traveling piecing unit responds to signals at a spinning station that indicate that a yarn break has occurred, that a package changing operation has occurred, or that winding of a package has been completed. Independently, a traveling package changing unit responds to a signal indicating that winding of a package has been completed at a spinning station and performs the package changing operation. When the piecing unit responds to a yarn break at a spinning station, it locates and withdraws the end of broken yarn from the package and positions it in a position where the unit then feeds the end to the spinning element to piece it with new yarn being spun and then releases it to the package, which resumes winding. When the piecing unit operates to restart winding after a package changing operation, it positions an end of yarn from a package of auxiliary yarn and performs the same piecing operation as with an end from a yarn break and then feeds the yarn onto the positioned empty bobbin.

Each of the operating stations is provided with a locating element while the service tender carries a sensor for aligning the service tender with a selected operating stations. The sensor includes a rotatable member on which a pair of rollers is mounted and from which a leaf extends to cooperate with various photodetectors. With the sensor in an operative position, the rollers sequentially contact the locating element of a selected operating station and by pivoting cause the leaf to cooperate with the photodetectors to generate a sequence of signals. This sequence of signals is used to slow the service tender and to thereafter brake the service tender to a halt in alignment with the selected operating station.Should the service tender overrun the locating element, signals are also generated to reverse the direction of movement of the service tender in order to effect alignment.

In preparation for the start of spinning with an open-end spinning apparatus, suction is provided outside a fiber transport path on the periphery of an opening roller. Such suction is greater than spinning suction which exists at the mouth of a feed channel leading to the fiber-collecting surface. The fiber stream is thereby guided beyond such mouth to be sucked off. At commencement of actual spinning, this added suction is inactivated, to permit the fiber stream to be initially supplied to the fiber-collecting surface. The fiber stream may be controlled with a suction source connected to a sucking-off orifice via a switching device and a suction line. Less conspicuous and more even thread joins are thereby obtained. Control of suction changes may be effected automatically from a servicing trolley, or in other manners. The invention may be practiced with a variety of types of spinning machines, including but not limited to open-end spinning machines having open end spinning rotors for thread formation or a plurality of friction rollers therefor.
