The stacked armature legs surround the crankshaft and are mounted to the stator bracket. The preferred heat conduction path travels from the armature legs through the aluminum plate on onto the stator bracket in order to improve the heat dissipation of the generator.

The linear actuator includes: first and second rotors connected to respective driving force sources; a linear motion unit formed on the first rotor to be linearly movable; and a driving power transmission unit which is fixed to the second rotor and engages the linear motion unit. A linear motion on a rotor can be easily induced using a relative angular velocity difference between two rotors without an additional driving power source for the linear motion.

In a magnetic coupler, a pair of magnet rotors is slidably mounted on rods. Ferrous material on the conductor rotors attracts the permanent magnets in the magnet rotors. Under static or relative static conditions, the attractive force urges the magnet rotors toward the conductor rotors to create a minimum, operational air gap therebetween. When there is a significant relative rotational velocity between the magnet rotors and the conductor rotors, a repulsion force urges the rotors apart. During start-up, latch arms retain the magnet rotors apart from the conductor rotors by a larger, soft-start air gap. During operation, centrifugal force moves the latch arms out of their active position. If the rotational speed of the load shaft decreases rapidly during operation, the magnet rotors move apart from the conductor rotors by a still larger, fully disengaged air gap.

A brushless permanent magnet electric machine with a fixed radial air gap is operated to a much higher speed than normal maximum speed by the reduction in effective magnet pole strength. Increasing the amount of axial misalignment of the permanent magnet rotor and constant velocity bearing proportionally increases the speed and reduces the torque. The permanent magnet rotor is offset axially to provide axial misalignment between the rotor magnet poles and the stator, reducing the effective magnet pole strength or flux to the stator. An integral constant velocity linear bearing is used to couple the movable rotor and the fixed position motor shaft. A thrust bearing is actuated to offset the magnetic rotor against the attractive magnetic forces toward the stator. The use of a constant velocity linear bearing allows the motor shaft, radial support bearings, position encoder, cooling fan, and output coupling to remain in a constant position while rotor position is offset.

A first set of permanent magnets (30) are arranged on a rotor (16) to produce a spatially variable first magnetic field. A second set of permanent magnets (32) are arranged on a rotor (40,41,43), stationary pole pieces (36) are positioned between the first set of permanent magnets (30) and the second set of permanent magnets (32) to interfere with the first magnetic field. Rotation of the rotor (16) relative to the pole pieces (36) produces a second magnetic field which rotates the second set of permanent magnets (32). A stator (42) has windings (46) to transduce a changing second magnetic field produced by the rotation of the second set of permanent magnets (32) into an electrical voltage. The electrical machine is useful for a wind turbine generator. Alternatively the arrangement may be modified to produce an electrical motor.
