    Abstract: A chromatic point sensor (CPS) optical pen provides a signal usable to measure a distance to a surface, and includes an axial chromatic aberration portion arranged to receive source radiation from an aperture, output it toward the surface as a focused measurement beam having axial chromatic dispersion, receive reflected radiation from the surface and focus it proximate to the aperture. The axial chromatic aberration portion includes a first axially dispersive focusing element that receives the source radiation and focuses it at a first focal region, a second axially dispersive focusing element that receives the radiation from the first focal region and focuses it at a second focal region, and a third axially dispersive focusing element that receives the radiation from the second focal region and outputs the measurement beam. Lengths between the first , second and third axially dispersive focusing elements are adjustable (i.e., resulting in an adjustable range).

    Abstract: A system is provided for programming workpiece feature inspection operations for a coordinate measuring machine. The system includes a computer-aided design (CAD) file processing portion, a geometric relationship analyzer, an inspection motion path generation portion, and a user interface including an editable plan representation of a current workpiece feature inspection plan, a workpiece inspection program simulation portion configured to display a 3D view including geometric features and inspection operation representations, and a context sensitive menu portion. The context sensitive menu portion displays a context sensitive relational command menu that indicates a valid set of relational commands including relational feature or relational measurement commands operable to define a corresponding constructed feature or corresponding relational measurement operation to be included in the current workpiece feature inspection plan. The valid set of relational commands is determined based on a concurrently selected geometric feature set including at least two geometric features concurrently selected and indicated in the user interface.

    Abstract: An inductive position detector for stylus position measurement in a scanning probe comprises a coil board configuration located along a central axis in the probe. The coil board configuration includes a field generating coil configuration and top and bottom axial and rotary sensing coil configurations. The field generating coil configuration generates a changing magnetic flux, and coil signals indicate conductive disruptor element and/or stylus positions. At least one misalignment compensation element is configured to reduce a signal offset that results from a misalignment of at least one coil of the coil board configuration (e.g., the coil board configuration may comprise a printed circuit board with a plurality of layers in which the coils are located and the misalignment of the at least one coil may result from a registration error, such as within manufacturing tolerances, in a layer to layer registration as part of a fabrication process).

    Abstract: There is provided a displacement measuring device that minimize unnecessary power consumption and improves power efficiency.
    A displacement measuring device includes a main scale and a detection head that is provided in such a manner as to be relatively displaceable to the main scale and outputs a periodic signal having a phase to be changed according to relative displacement to the main scale.
    The detection head outputs, as the periodic signal, a coarse scale signal having a coarse period and a fine scale signal having a fine period. A coarse phase detector calculates, from two pieces of phase information acquired from the coarse scale signal, the average phase of the coarse scale signal. A fine phase detector calculates, from four pieces of phase information acquired from the fine scale signal, the average phase of the fine scale signal. The coarse phase detector calculates the average phase of the coarse scale signal from the two pieces of phase information and, then, stops operating without the completion of the operation of the fine phase detector.

    Abstract: A hardness tester includes an indenter, an arm and a driver which loads a test force onto the indenter and press the indenter against a sample, a spring displacement amount sensor detecting a value for the test force loaded onto the indenter, and a controller. In a state where a predetermined test force (total test force) is loaded onto the indenter by the driver, when the value of the test force detected by the spring displacement amount sensor exceeds a predefined allowable margin relative to the predetermined test force, the controller executes predetermined processes, including an interrupt process interrupting the test currently being executed and a notification process notifying a user that the value of the test force exceeded the allowable margin during execution of the test.
