摘要: Determining a contact condition between read-write head and accessed disk surface inside hard disk drive, where micro-actuator assembly mechanically couples to slider and electrically interacts through signal path. Signal path sensed, creating sensed feedback signal, used to determine contact condition, which indicates when read-write head is, or is not, in contact with accessed disk surface. Means for implementing this process. Contact condition is product of process. The process may respond to contact condition, altering read-write head flying height. Process may be implemented as operations of embedded control system and/or servo controller. Method of predictive failure analysis using the contact condition to estimate performance parameter and create performance degradation warning. Manufacture process collecting contact condition to partly create reliability estimate of the hard disk drive, which may be form of Mean Time to Failure. Manufacturing may further include screening the hard disk drive based upon the reliability estimate.

摘要: A magnetic head follows a track in a hard disk drive as positioned by micro-actuator and voice coil motor. Embodiments operate two control paths. The micro-actuator control path generates a version of micro-actuator control signal stimulating the micro-actuator. The voice coil motor control path generates a version of voice coil control signal, amplified based upon tuning gain to stimulate voice coil motor. A decoupling feedback filter decouples these control paths, using the micro-actuator control signal version. Either control path may include a notch filter. A track following command, with PES removed, directs the micro-actuator control. The servo-controller may digitally support the invention, which may include the servo-controller program system. An implementation may be optimized within a hard disk drive, possibly as part of the manufacturing process. The hard disk drive is a product of that process.

摘要: A sinusoidal signal is added to the notch filtered micro-actuator control signal stimulating the micro-actuator. The voice coil control signal is notch filtered to remove the frequency component of the sinusoidal signal before it stimulates the voice coil motor. The micro-actuator control signal is notch filtered to remove the frequency component of the sinusoidal signal before it stimulates the micro-actuator. The response of the system is measured as the Position Error Signal (PES), for the magnetic head moved by the micro-actuator. The measured PES is then demodulated at the frequency of the sinusoidal signal to create a measured amplitude. The stroke sensitivity is then calculated from the measured amplitude and amplitude of the sinusoidal stimulus. The frequency of the sinusoidal signal and notch filters is essentially the same, chosen away from significant excitation frequencies and outside the bandwidth of the servo system. The invention includes using multiple frequencies, as well as various formulas for the stroke sensitivity. The invention may be applied to more than one micro-actuator within the hard disk drive to create a stroke sensitivity for each micro-actuator, a combination, or for all micro-actuators. The invention includes the method implemented using a servo-controller, as well as the program system for the servo-controller, at least partly implementing the method.

摘要: A head gimbal assembly may include a piezo layer mechanically coupled with the slider. Bending the piezo layer alters flying height. Alternatively, it may include a piezo element mechanically coupled by a flexure to the slider top near the read-write head, which when excited, bends the flexure to alter the flying height. A bridge flex circuit is included, providing a piezo-control bundle to at least one of the piezo layer leads. The flex circuit assembly may further provide a piezo control bundle, shared with the piezo control bundles for multiple read-write heads. The head gimbal assembly may include a micro-actuator to position the read-write head near a track on the accessed, rotating disk surface. The flex circuit assembly may provide a source control bundle, shared with micro-actuator control bundles for multiple read-write heads. When accessing, all micro-actuators perform the same positioning action, insuring proper positioning of the read-write head. This applies to co-located and non co-located micro-actuators. Wire bundles may include one or two active signal wires. Voice coil actuators and the hard disk drives, as well as making these, are included.
