Abstract: Mutual-complementary modeling and testing methods are disclosed that can enable validated mapping from external oil and gas information sources to existing fluid optical databases through the use of forward and inverse neural networks. The forward neural networks use fluid compositional inputs to produce fluid principal spectroscopy components (PSC). The inverse neural networks apply PSC inputs to estimate fluid compositional outputs. The fluid compositional data from external sources can be tested through forward models first. The produced PSC outputs are then entered as inputs to inverse models to generate fluid compositional data. The degree of matching between reconstructed fluid compositions and the original testing data suggests which part of the new data can be integrated directly into the existing database as validated mapping. The applications of using PSC inputs to reconstruct infrared spectra and estimate oil-based-mud (OBM) contamination with endmember spectral fingerprints are also included.

Abstract: A system to determine a contamination level of a formation fluid, the system including a formation tester tool to be positioned in a borehole, wherein the borehole has a mixture of the formation fluid and a drilling fluid and the formation tester tool includes a sensor to detect time series measurements from a plurality of sensor channels. The system includes a processor to dimensionally reduce the time series measurements to generate a set of reduced measurement scores in a multi-dimensional measurement space and determine an end member in the multi-dimensional measurement space based on the set of reduced measurement scores, wherein the end member comprises a position in the multi-dimensional measurement space that corresponds with a predetermined fluid concentration. The processor also determines the contamination level of the formation fluid at a time point based the set of reduced measurement scores and the end member.

Optical signal data received from the deployed optical sensor is received by a model configured to determine downhole environment characteristics directly from optical signal data. The model determines a downhole environment characteristic from the optical signal data and provides the determined characteristic to a user.

Abstract: An apparatus comprises a subsurface sensor to be positioned in a wellbore formed in a subsurface formation, wherein the subsurface sensor is to detect subsurface measurements. The apparatus includes a processor and a machine-readable medium having program code executable by the processor to cause the processor to generate a combination of functions based on the subsurface measurements, wherein the combination of functions is a subset of functions from a library of functions. The program code is executable by the processor to cause the processor to determine at least one function parameter of at least one function of the combination of functions and determine at least one formation property of the subsurface formation based on the at least one function parameter.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a subsurface sensor in a borehole to provide a measurement series, a first processor, and a machine-readable medium having program code. The program code causes the apparatus to obtain the measurement series and generate a combination of functions based on the measurement series, wherein the combination of functions includes a subset of functions from a basis function library. The system also generate a set of values and communicates the set of values to a second processor, wherein the set of values includes a function identifier and corresponding function weight. The second processor is to generate a set of reconstructed measurement series based on the set of values and determine at least one of a formation property, a fluid property, and a well status based on the set of reconstructed measurement series.

Abstract: A method and system for performing a pressure test. The method may comprise inserting a formation testing tool into a wellbore to a first location within the wellbore, identifying one or more tool parameters of the formation testing tool, performing a first pre-test with the pressure transducer when the pressure has stabilized to identify formation parameters, inputting the formation parameters and the one or more tool parameters into a forward model, changing the one or more tool parameters to a second set of tool parameters; performing a second pre-test with the second set of tool parameters; and comparing the first pre-test to the second pre-test. A system may comprise at least one probe, a pump disposed within the formation testing tool, at least one stabilizer, a pressure transducer disposed at least partially in the at least one fluid passageway, and an information handling system.

Abstract: A method including generating integrated computational element (ICE) models and determining a sensor response as the projection of a convolved spectrum associated with a sample library with a plurality of transmission profiles determined from the ICE models. The method includes determining a regression vector based on a multilinear regression that targets a sample characteristic with the sensor response and the sample library and determine a plurality of regression coefficients in a linear combination of ICE transmission vectors that results in the regression vector. The method further includes determining a difference between the regression vector and an optimal regression vector. The method may also include modifying the ICE models when the difference is greater than a tolerance, and fabricating ICEs based on the ICE models when the difference is within the tolerance. A device and a system for optical analysis including multiple ICEs fabricated as above, are also provided.

Abstract: A method includes obtaining a plurality of master sensor responses with a master sensor in a set of training fluids and obtaining node sensor responses in the set of training fluids. A linear correlation between a compensated master data set and a node data set is then found for a set of training fluids and generating node sensor responses in a tool parameter space from the compensated master data set on a set of application fluids. A reverse transformation is obtained based on the node sensor responses in a complete set of calibration fluids. The reverse transformation converts each node sensor response from a tool parameter space to the synthetic parameter space and uses transformed data as inputs of various fluid predictive models to obtain fluid characteristics. The method includes modifying operation parameters of a drilling or a well testing and sampling system according to the fluid characteristics.

Abstract: A device including at least two ICEs that optically interact with a sample light to generate a first and a second modified lights is provided. The at least two ICEs include alternating layers of material, each of the layers having a thickness selected such that the weighted linear combination of the transmission functions is similar to the regression vector associated with a characteristic of the sample. The device may also include a detector that measures a property of the first and second modified lights separately to generate a first and second signal, respectively, wherein the weighted average of first and second signals is linearly related to the characteristic of the sample. A method for fabricating the above device is also provided.
