    摘要: An improved lighting fixture of the type having a horizontally positioned unjacketed arc lamp in a two piece reflector having a front bowl-shaped reflector that issues a relatively narrow beam and a rear dish-shaped reflector positioned behind the arc tube that issues a wider beam spread. Although such a fixture inherently has some glare and spill control by exploiting the horizontal, transverse positioning of the arc tube across the reflector combination, the invention improves on glare and spill control from this fixture by re-orienting the rear reflector so that it is tipped slightly downward. The upper part of the beam from the rear reflector is therefore moved so that it does not cause glare or spill off of the target area, and also it increases efficiency of the fixture by placing more usable light on the target area. Optionally a visor can be used to further control glare and spill.

    摘要: A glare control lamp and reflector assembly and method for glare control which includes a conventional lamp and symmetrical reflector for providing a controlled light beam to a target area. A reflector shield can be positioned on the reflector below the lamp and has the properties of diverging incident light downwardly towards the target area and thus controls reflection upwardly which would produce glare. A glare shield can be positioned on the top of the reflector and extends outwardly from the outer edge of the reflector to block both direct light and reflected light from traveling upwardly and outwardly which would produce glare. In a further combination, a lamp shield can be positioned over a portion of the outermost extending end of the lamp to prevent unreflected light from directly causing glare. The method for controlling glare includes the steps of providing a conventional lamp and reflector assembly, positioning a reflector shield in the bottom of the reflector beneath the bulb to coverge instant light downwardly to the target area, and providing a glare shield extending around and outwardly from the top of the reflector to block and divert incident light downwardly towards the target area. An additional step would be to provide a lamp shield over the outwardmost end of the lamp to block directly emanating light from causing glare.

    摘要: A means and method for increasing the amount, efficiency, and flexibility of use of light from an arc lamp. A first aspect of the inventnion includes an arc lamp in a lighting fixture wherein the arc tube positioned within the arc lamp has a longitudinal axis which is offset and/or tilted from the general longitudinal axis of the arc lamp. A second aspect of the invention involves methods and structures to position the arc tube of an arc lamp in a generally horizontal or vertical position irregardless of the aiming direction for the light from the arc lamp, and any related reflecting apparatus. The longitudinal axis of the arc tube can either be offset and/or tilted with respect to the longitudinal axis of the arc lamp, or they can be coaxial and the entire arc lamp can be positioned horizontally or vertically, offset and/or tilted from the aiming direction of the fixture and any attendant reflecting structure. A third aspect of the invention utilizes methods and structure to adjust the arc lamp to a desired rotational orientation with respect to a reflecting structure. A fourth aspect of the invention involves apparatus to allow desired mounting of the arc lamp to insure the desired orientation of the arc tube with respect to the arc lamp and to any mounting or reflecting structure.

    摘要: A means and method for dimming ballasted lamps ensures that sufficient starting voltage is always available to the ballasted lamps, yet allows switching between maximum light output, and one or more dimmed light output levels. Each lamp is connected to a ballast and has a capacitor component in parallel between the ballast and the lamp. A selection or switching device allows control of the desired light output level. For dimmed light output levels, the selection device causes a reduction in capacitance of the capacitance component to reduce the power to each of the lamps. An optional timing device ensures that full capacitance will always be available during starting. Once the selected timing period of the timing device is expired, the selected light level is achieved by automatically changing the capacitance available to each lamp to alter the output of that lamp. The selection or switching device can control a single lamp, or an array of lamps, or multiple arrays of lamps at spaced apart locations.

The arc shield serves to block and redirect light from a short distance from the arc in an accurate and efficient manner without much loss of useful light. The arc shield can be used individually or in combination with any of the reflector shields, glare shields, and lamp shields.
