Two capacitors, each with a respective first terminal connected to a corresponding input terminal, and a respective second terminal connected to the ground terminal, are charged by the current signal when the capacitor's corresponding switch is in an off state. Respective output terminals are coupled to each capacitor's first terminal to provide respective control signals, indicating the respective switch's state as a function of a voltage level across that capacitor. Each control signal has a logic level corresponding to its respective switch's state.

The present invention provides, in one embodiment, a gas discharge lamp ballast with an integral shutdown timer. The ballast includes a circuit for receiving AC power, a converter circuit for converting the AC power to DC power and a square wave oscillator powered from the DC power. A resonant circuit powered by the square wave oscillator supplies power to at least one gas discharge lamp. A time-delay circuit disables the square wave oscillator, without interrupting the DC power supplied to the oscillator, upon the passage of a predetermined period of time from power-up of the AC power. The ballast can be realized with only a marginal increase in cost and size of the ballast.

Energy savings are realized. The increases also restore at least some light lost by lamp lumen depreciation. The apparatus uses a timer to track operating time of the lamp. A few wattage changes made at spaced apart times can be made in a number of ways, including changing capacitance to the lamp, or using different taps on the lamp ballast. In one aspect the invention pertains to solid state sources. The invention can pertain to a variety of applications including wide area lighting, indoor lighting, pathway lighting, parking lot lighting, street lighting, under-counter or -cabinet lighting, and others.

An electronic ballast for an HID lamp is described, comprising: a rectifier circuit; a PFC power factor correction circuit increasing the direct current (DC) voltage coming out from the rectifier circuit; a current converter receiving the high voltage DC and converts it to alternating current (AC) to be supplied to the lamp; an ignition circuit generating ignition pulses being fed to the converter circuit to turn on the lamp, the pulses are generated by a downward frequencies scan, and, a control circuit commanding the operation of the ignition circuit and controlling the power being supplied to the lamp according to a power profile being determined by the lightning conditions desired to be obtained from said lamp to save energy. The operative method for the ballast is also described.
