    Abstract: The disclosure relates to a fifth generation (5G) or sixth generation (6G) communication system for supporting a higher data transmission rate. The disclosure provides a method and an apparatus for activating/deactivating a cell discontinuous transmission (DTX) operation and a cell discontinuous reception (DRX) operation. A method performed by a base station of a wireless communication system is provided. The method includes generating a cell DTX/DRX operation message including at least one field indicating an operation regarding at least one of a cell DTX operation and a cell DRX operation regarding each of at least one cell, transmitting, to a user equipment (UE), the generated cell DTX/DRX operation message, and performing communication with the UE in the at least one cell according to a cell DTX/DRX operation based on the transmitted cell DTX/DRX operation message.
