Abstract: A wireless telecommunications system supports a virtual carrier operation mode in which downlink communications are made by a base station while a terminal device can receive at least some communications from the base station within a restricted subset of transmission resources, and supports terminal devices in a radio resource control connected mode and radio resource control idle mode. When there is to be a change in system information the base station transmits to the terminal device an indication that updated system information is to be broadcast by the base station, the indication received by the terminal device while in the connected mode. Before seeking to acquire the updated system information, the terminal device transitions from the connected mode to the idle mode, and then seeks to acquire updated system information. The base station restricts transmission of user-plane data to the terminal device until the terminal device re-enters the connected mode.

Abstract: A method of operating a terminal device in a wireless telecommunications system, wherein the terminal device is configured to selectively switch between an active operating mode and a reduced-power operating mode, wherein the method comprises: communicating with a network entity to exchange a block of data between the terminal device and the network entity while the terminal device is in the active operating mode; determining when communications associated with the exchange of the block of data are complete; and in response to determining communications associated with the exchange of the block of data are complete, switching from the active operating mode to the reduced-power operating mode. The terminal device supports a protocol stack comprising a physical, PHY, layer, a medium access control, MAC, layer, and a radio link control, RLC, layer, and determining when communications associated with the exchange of the block of data are complete and the device should switch to the low-power mode is performed by the radio link control, RLC, layer.

Abstract: A wireless telecommunications system including first and second terminal devices operable to communicate with one another in a synchronized device-to-device manner. Abstract: A wireless telecommunications system in which downlink communications are made using a radio interface that spans a system frequency bandwidth (host carrier) and supports at least some communications from a base station to least some terminal devices within a plurality of restricted frequency bands (virtual carriers) which are narrower than and within the system frequency bandwidth. A terminal device conveys an indication of its identity, to the base station during an initial connection procedure as the terminal device seeks to access the radio interface. The terminal device and the base station both determine a selected restricted frequency band from among the plurality of restricted frequency bands based on the identity of the terminal device in the same way. Thus the terminal device and base station select the same restricted frequency band and can accordingly configure their respective transceivers to allow downlink communications between them within the selected restricted frequency band.

Abstract: A communications device configured to transmit signals representing data to one or more in-coverage communications devices forming with the communications device a group, one of the in-coverage communications devices acting as an active relay node for the communications device, so that the in-coverage communications device can transmit signals representing the data to the infrastructure equipment of the mobile communications network, and to receive signals representing the data from the in-coverage communications device acting as the active relay node. The signals transmitted to the in-coverage communications device are received according to a device-to-device communications protocol, wherein the signals transmitted by the communications device or received by the communications device include an identifier which identifies the signals to the in-coverage communications device. One of the other in-coverage communications device can be selected by the infrastructure equipment to act as the active relay node.
