Stream selection unit 17 selects a text subtitle stream judged as being able to be decoded.

Then, an entry map, in which each Intra picture is represented by one of the values “001b” to “111b”, are to be recorded onto a recording medium in association with the assignment information.

The title includes a data management table. The data management table indicates an application read priority level for each title. The BD-J module (35) includes a java virtual machine (38), a local memory (29), and an application manager (36) for loading the application to the local memory (29). The application manager (36) reads in the application into the local memory (29) according to the read priority level of each application and the memory size of the local memory (29).

    摘要： In a playback device for playing back a moving image recorded on a recording medium while executing an application recorded on the recording medium, to improve the use efficiency of a memory bus when combining the moving image with an image relating to the application. Whether or not to combine a background image, which is used as a background of GUI graphics such as a menu or a moving picture used by the application, is determined depending on whether the moving image covers the entire background image. If the moving image covers the background image, there is no need to combine the background image with the moving image. In this case, a memory bus allocated to the reading of the background image can be used for, for example, writing the moving image read from the recording medium onto a memory. Hence the memory bus bandwidth can be effectively used.

Application_type indicates that entry information of each of pieces of picture data constituting the video stream exists in the EP_map and each piece of picture data is to be decoded independently. Playlist information includes a plurality of pieces of playback path information, each including time information designating a piece of picture data and period information indicating a period for which playback of the pieces of picture data is paused.
