Abstract:
Motion-based handoff control techniques are disclosed. For example, an apparatus may include a signal strength determination module, a motion determination module, and a handoff controller. The signal strength determination module generates signal strength information corresponding to the strength of a wireless signal received from a first wireless link. From this information, the motion determination module determines a motion characteristic of the apparatus. Based on the motion characteristic, the handoff controller performs handoff operations for a second wireless link. In this manner, handoff operations may be tailored to the operational characteristics of the apparatus. For instance, certain handoff operations may be halted when the motion characteristic indicates the apparatus having a substantially stationary position. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for creating a communication group using an electronic address book to facilitate Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) group communication sessions are disclosed. A group definition for determining members of the new PoC Group is composed from one or more contacts from the electronic address book such as by selecting from the address book using the mobile station. The group definition may include logical operators to define the combination of contacts. A name may be specified for the new group. The assembly of the PoC Group list of members may be performed by the mobile station, a communication network server for maintaining PoC Groups (e.g. a Group and List Management Server (GLMS)) or an email server.
Abstract:
Electronic devices may be provided that contain wireless communication circuitry. The wireless communication circuitry may include radio-frequency transceiver circuitry coupled to antennas. An electronic device may include a baseband processor and other storage and processing circuitry that implements protocol stacks for handling multiple radio access technologies. The storage and processing circuitry may use the transceiver circuitry to convey data using a first radio access technology while periodically interrupting the conveying of the data to monitor a paging channel using a second radio access technology. In performing the paging channel monitoring operations, the storage and processing circuitry may enforce a time limit that ensures that operations using the first radio access technology are not disrupted more than desired.
Abstract:
Techniques to dynamically manage wireless connections are described. For example, a mobile computing device may comprise a connection management module to dynamically select one of a plurality of switching technologies to initiate a connection with one or more target devices and automatically initiate the connection with the one or more target devices using the dynamically selected switching technology. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
Abstract:
Techniques to dynamically manage wireless connections using feature prioritization are described. For example, a mobile computing device may comprise a connection management module operative to access a list of one or more wireless networks, compare feature set information for the one or more wireless networks, select a wireless network based on the comparison, and initiate a wireless connection using the selected wireless network, wherein the feature set information is contained in the list. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for synchronizing operational state during hybrid network operation. In one embodiment, the various access technologies that makeup the hybrid network not fully synchronized. Thus, a wireless device operating in a mixed mode must be capable of managing synchronization across multiple access technologies. The wireless device is configured to estimate an expected “tune-away” period when disengaging with a one access technology to address events (for example, link maintenance, calls, data, and the like) or perform monitoring on a second access technology. The estimate is then used by the device to adjust its operational parameters on the technology from which it is tuning away. This ensures smooth switching away from and back to the various network technologies.
Abstract:
A technique in a wireless device for use in establishing wireless connections is described. The device stores at least one list of wireless networking information. The device receives a request for executing one of a first application or a second application. For executing the first application, the device selects first wireless networking information from the at least one list, where the first wireless networking information is associated with one or more wireless networking devices of a first type, and scans to identify the one or more wireless networking devices of the first type for establishing a wireless connection therewith for communication with the first application. For executing the second application, the device selects second wireless networking information from the at least one list, where the second wireless networking information is associated with one or more wireless networking devices of a second type, and scans to identify the one or more wireless networking devices of the second type for establishing a wireless connection therewith for communication with the second application.
Abstract:
According to the embodiments of the techniques of this application, a wireless data device or other data node sends solicitation messages periodically to a wireless gateway, such as a PDSN, when there is no data traffic between the wireless data device and a wireless data network. Each solicitation message resets the simple IP inactivity timer on the wireless gateway. When multiple wireless data devices send solicitation messages, the interval between subsequent transmissions of solicitation messages is randomized to reduce the probability of collision with the solicitations from other devices on the same wireless link. The solicitation timer, for instance, may be based on the simple IP inactivity timer setting on the wireless network, and the number of wireless data devices that the wireless data network serves. Expiration of the solicitation timer at the wireless data device or other data node causes the next solicitation message to be sent from or on behalf of the wireless data device.
Abstract:
A cellular communications system may include at least one base station and at least one mobile cellular communications device. More particularly, the at least one mobile cellular communications device may include a controller, at least one user input device connected to the controller, and a wireless transceiver cooperating with the controller for attempting to establish a wireless communications link with at least one base station, and if the wireless communications link cannot be established, then continuing to attempt to establish the wireless communications link at a first attempt rate. Moreover, if a user provides a request to access the at least one base station via the at least one user input device, then the controller may continue to attempt to establish the wireless communications link based upon a second attempt rate greater than the first attempt rate.
Abstract:
Techniques to provide enhanced message management services are described. An apparatus may comprise a mobile computing device having a radio module operative to establish a wireless communication channel with a wireless resource, and a message manager communicatively coupled to the radio module. The message manager may be operative to receive a message size parameter for a message, determine a first time parameter representing a length of time needed to communicate the message based on an available bandwidth parameter, determine a second time parameter representing a length of time available to communicate the message based on an available power parameter, and send a transmit control directive to the radio module indicating whether to communicate the message over the wireless communication channel based on the first and second time parameters. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
