    摘要: In a printer utilizing piezoelectric crystals, electrostrictive members, as the prime movers for the print hammers, significant power reduction may be achieved by applying a high voltage to contract the piezoelectric crystal and then discharging that voltage thereby causing the crystal to expand at a rapid rate thus driving the print hammer. The crystal is initially charged across its width, which is transverse to the direction of travel of the crystal, causing a reduction in its length. A transistorized switching circuit is utilized to discharge the high voltage applied to the crystal thus causing the crystal to expand at a rapid rate. By providing a charging time constant substantially longer than the time required to discharge the potential across the crystal, the current requirements, and thus the power requirements, for the system are substantially reduced.

    摘要: An improved electromagnet design for use as a dot-matrix printer drive element. A solid winding core is provided with integral pole pieces at both ends. A leaf spring is secured to a first pole piece and extends generally parallel to the axis of the core. A magnetic field shunt piece is secured at the free end of the spring on the side facing the core. A printing wire shoe is also secured to the leaf spring at its free end, and extends away from it. The printing wire is affixed in the shoe and extends back across the axis of the core. In the un-energized condition, there is a gap between the shunt and the second pole piece that is roughly one-half of the desired stroke of the printing wire. The electromagnet is of very low mass, but operates at high speed with a long printing stroke having maximum force at the moment of impact of the printing wire on the printing medium. This design allows a plurality of such drive elements to be radially mounted in a circle with all of the respective printing wires close to the center of that circle. The center of the circle will also coincide with the centerline axis of the printed characters.

    摘要: A printing mechanism actuator for use with a hammer assembly in an on-the-fly type digital printer. The actuator is magnetically actuated and through an actuating arm imparts force to a corresponding hammer pin to cause it to be thrust into printing position. Support structure aligns the actuating arm, and spring biasing means connected to the support effectively returns the actuating arm to its resting position after actuation. The actuators are placed so that each succeeding actuator opposes the preceding actuator with only the hammer impact areas forming a common line and this design coupled with the compactness of the actuators permits the placement of ten units per lineal inch.

    摘要: A print hammer actuating assembly for a high speed printer, wherein a one-piece magnetic block is secured to a first core structure to provide a second core unit which includes a multiplicity of integral pole pieces. The block is of elongated construction and it has a series of spaced apart projections extending transversely to its longitudinal axis to provide discrete pole pieces. A series of elongated bores extend transversely to the longitudinal axis of the block in alignment with each of the projections. A hammer actuator assembly is disposed in each bore. A bucking coil contiguously surrounds each of the projections to provide a series of selectively energizable magnetic fields for operating each hammer actuator. With such an arrangement, the single pole piece block may be readily manufactured and assembled, at reduced cost. In addition, the working distance between tips of hammers and the paper may be readily adjusted by means of a single operation, thus affording a considerable saving in field maintenance time.
