A single turnout rotary guideway switch is provided with an elongated structural frame member having guidebeam, electric rail and tire path structure on each of two sides of the switch compatible with the guidebeam, electric rail and tire path structure of the guideway. Switching is achieved by rotating a movable part of the switch 180 degrees about its longitudinal axis. One elongated beam acts as a principal structural member of the frame and provides a tire path on one of the switch sides for main line car routing by the switch. Another curved beam is secured between the one beam and another elongated beam that extends generally parallel to the one beam. The curved beam cross-supports the frame and provides a tire path on the other switch side for car turnout routing by the switch. In a crossover switching station in a dual lane guideway, a pair of the single turnout rotary switches are combined with an interface guideway section to provide for lane-crossover car routing by the switches.

A monorail track switch and method is disclosed wherein the track switch senses the approach of a train and automatically aligns itself to accommodate passage of the train. Circuits are provided to selectively deenergize a movable track section when in nonaligned position and to re-energize the track section when properly aligned. Novel structure and method is also provided for lowering the movable track section onto rollers to facilitate movement and thereafter lifting the track section into horizontal alignment with the train path. Electronic lockout circuits prevent a train from overrunning the switch when the switch is in a nonaligned position.

A personal transportation system including a guideway of channel members submerged beneath the ground with an opening along the ground line, the guideway including an intersection, a rail running along the base of the channel members for supporting wheeled, passenger carrying vehicle thereon, and a steering system for selectively steering the vehicle through the intersection and into one of at least two guideway sections leading from the intersection. The steering system includes a probe extending forward of the vehicle and a guide member in the form of a vane associated with the guideway such that the probe contacts the guide member causing the guide member to move to a position wherein the vehicle is selectively guided through the intersection and into one of the guideway sections leading from the intersection, such guidance being accomplished by orienting the probe relative to the guide member such that the latter is moved to a position which provides positive guidance of the vehicle into the desired exiting guideway section. The vehicle is provided with controls manually or remotely operable to command operation of the vehicle. The opening of the guideway is provided with a cover in the form of a pair of flaps which meet in a puckered relationship at the center line of the channel opening. The cover is constructed to prevent debris from falling into the channel in normal use. The flaps are pushed apart by the vehicle as it travels and upon passing the flaps return to their puckered relationship.

Disclosed herein is a new and improved railway vehicle supported by rimless support wheels and guided by special guide wheels and control wheels on a unique track system comprising horizontal main rails having horizontal surfaces upon which traction wheels mounted on horizontal axes for the railway car are supported, guide rails having vertical control surfaces spaced above or below (depending upon whether the railway vehicle is bottom supported or suspended) in non-branching portions of the rail system, and auxiliary or directional rails also having vertical control surfaces. The vertical surfaces of the directional rails contact the control wheels mounted on the railway vehicle for controlling che direction that the railway vehicle takes in traversing a branch. The guide wheels and control wheels are mounted on vertical axes for rotation in horizontal planes and are supported on a unique linkage which is adapted, under a dynamic control influence applied from within the vehicle itself or from a static camming control influence applied by a steering rail disposed in the railway path prior to a junction (in which pairs of tracks are merging or diverging), to pivot the control wheels about the guide wheels to contact a selected one of the directional rails for the purpose of properly and safely directing the railway vehicle as it traverses the junction.

This disclosure relates to a guideway switch for self-guided vehicles having at least two selectable routes of travel. The switch includes at least two movable guide beams each having one end pivotally connected with the stationary guide rails of a roadway having a horizontal supporting surface on each side of the guide rails. A plurality of wheeled carriers are disposed below the horizontal supporting surfaces and are guided by a trackway. Each wheeled carrier includes a vertically adjustable support which has one end rigidly connected to the movable guide beams and which has the other end rotatably and slidably connected to the wheeled carrier. An actuating means includes an electric motor which drives a ball bearing screw drive mechanism. The screw drive mechanism moves the wheeled carriers and, in turn, shifts the movable beams to selected positions to establish the desired route of travel over the roadway for the self-guided vehicles.
