A door lock assembly which includes an electronic card reader is provided whereby when the clutch assembly is in the activated position, rotational movement of the outside handle is transmitted by way of a spindle through the mortise and through the clutch assembly to a clutch disk disposed between the mortise and clutch assemblies and the inside housing. Rotational movement of the clutch disk is then imparted back towards the door through a drive disk and hub drive to the mortise latch hub which is disposed in the mortise housing disposed inside the door structure. As a result, the clutch disk and clutch assembly can be disposed between the inside housing and the inside door surface and the electronic components of the card reader and clutch assembly can be conveniently housed in the inside housing assembly. An additional spacer hub is disposed between the outside housing and the mortise latch hub which makes it difficult to tamper with the mortise latch hub from the outside of the door.

The invention is a motorized linkage for engaging a thumb piece in a door mechanism. The device has an exterior lock assembly with a small battery cell and combination lock. Proper entry by a user of a security code allows the battery to operate a small motor within the exterior lock assembly. The small motor manipulates a cam-plunger which moves an actuator pin into a thumb piece. The user applies a force on to the thumb piece. This force is transmitted by the thumb piece to a latch engagement mechanism by the actuator pin. The latch engagement mechanism operates the door latch.

There is disclosed a knob control arrangement or system whereby the status of a knob associated with a lock mechanism can be controlled from exteriorly of the lock housing and can be selectively rendered active-operable or passive-inoperable. In this regard, when in the passive-inoperable condition, the knob will merely rotate relative to the housing without imparting force or stress to the lock components. This mode of operation is achieved by providing a knob hub rotatably mounted to the lock housing to which a knob member may be affixed. Interiorly of the housing, the knob hub will move relative to a main cam member used to effect operation of the lock mechanism. The knob control arrangement includes means for selectively interconnecting and disconnecting the knob hub and the main cam member, such that when connected, an active-operable condition is attained, and when disconnected, the passive-inoperable mode is achieved.
