Cross-component measurements made at a plurality of toolface angles are processed to remove bias. The amplitude of the resulting sinusoid is used to estimate a distance to an interface in an earth formation.

Methods and systems are provided for displaying and forecasting the lithology and wellbore conditions to be encountered while conducting drill string operations in a wellbore. A method and system is described for predicting and modeling lithology while operating a drill string in a wellbore, comprising: developing a 3-D lithological model of a subsurface area; projecting a well path through said subsurface area; determining an open cylinder lithology display of said projected well path; and recording said determined open cylinder display. The open cylinder lithology display (the Predictive Stratigraphy Image) may be displayed with geological or structural cross-sections to compare the well path and the predicted well path, with the actual subsurface environment. Data acquired during drilling operations can be used in real time to update the model or the Predictive Stratigraphy Image, and the results compared with Predictive Image Logs and other wellbore images and data.
摘要:
A directional sensor system that incorporates a single axis sensor element that is manipulated to a plurality of orientations. The resulting responses of the sensor element at these locations are combined to obtain a measure of orientation of the system. The system applicable for determining orientation of instrumentation within a well borehole such as measurement-while-drilling, wireline and tubing conveyed borehole instrumentation. The system can be used in other subsurface and surface applications.
摘要:
Measurement of petrophysical and geophysical data of formations in a wellbore using a long gauge bit having at least one sensor therewith. The at least one sensor may be installed in at least one flute of the long gauge bit and/or in the long gauge portion thereof. Data for creating images of the formations are obtained at or near the bottom of the borehole and proximate to the long gauge bit used for drilling the borehole. Orientation of the long gauge bit is also available on a real time basis. Magnetic and/or gravitational sensors may be used in determining bit orientation. The flutes of the long gauge bit and the long gauge portion thereof may have standard inserts to accommodate various types of different sensors and electronic packages therefor.

A system and method for determining an orientation of the survey tool within a borehole utilizes a survey tool including a plurality of rotation sensors each having a sensing axis and a direction of least acceleration sensitivity. The plurality of rotation sensors are mounted in a housing with their sensing axes generally parallel to one another and with their directions of least acceleration sensitivity generally non-parallel to one another. The survey tool further includes a controller adapted to calculate a weighted average of the detected angular rotation rates from the plurality of rotation sensors. The weighted average includes the detected angular rotation rate of each rotation sensor about its sensing axis weighted by the detected acceleration along its direction of least acceleration sensitivity.

A system and method estimates the distance between a borehole and a subsurface boundary of interest in a geophysical region. In one embodiment, available existing sensor data for the geophysical region is used to create a resistivity model of the region, with the model reflecting changes in resistivity across the boundary. A hypothetical borehole has a number of segments along its length that are spaced-apart from the boundary by different, preselected distances. The ratio between two selected resistivity curves in each of the respective spaced-apart segments is computed, and these ratio values are plotted as a function of distance from the boundary. A curve-fitting algorithm is applied to derive an equation, which may be applied to actual sensor data from a sensor package.

In some embodiments, an apparatus and a system, as well as a method and an article, may include coupling a plurality of masses to provide a plurality of output signals responsive to motion relative to a common axis. Moving the plurality of masses at a substantially common frequency, moving a subset of the plurality of masses out of phase with the remainder of the plurality of masses, and combining the plurality of output signals to provide a combined signal associated with a response property of at least one of the plurality of masses may also be included.
