A pitch or camber control motor, self-governing wind vane mechanism, or governing mechanism is operable to move a circular cam to vary blade pitch or camber to control rotor speed. The duct is mounted on a mast having a base supported on a foundation for pivotal movement to face the wind for maximizing air flow through the duct. Electric power generators are connected to opposite ends of the rotor at respective power output or drive shafts.

The twist distribution of torsionally-flexible rotor blades is adjusted by exploiting centrifugal effect on inertial torquers affixed at one or more stations along the blade span. Twist is thereby made to vary passively as a function of rotor speed and hub incidence angle. With inertias of appropriate size and location, the twist variation is such that high rotor efficiency is maintained over a wide range of operating conditions. Satisfactory dynamic behavior of the blade, including cyclic-pitch response and flutter resistance, is simultaneously achieved.

A turbine with a vertical axis of rotation is described, with particular reference to a wind powered embodiment. It is advantageous to ensure that a turbine rotates at a substantially constant speed despite variations in the driving force and to ensure that the turbine is not damaged when the driving force is excessive. The turbine includes a plurality of turbine blades arranged about a central axis, with each turbine blade being pivotally mounted towards its outer periphery about an axis substantially parallel to the central axis. A biasing element biases the inner periphery of the turbine blades towards the central axis. As the speed of rotation of the turbine increases, the blades swing out of the wind and there center of gravity moves away from the central axis, tending to slow the speed of rotation.

A ram air turbine is provided for use in driving electric and/or hydraulic power systems in an aircraft, wherein the ram air turbine includes primary and secondary speed control governors. The primary governor includes centrifugal flyweights for cam-actuated adjustment of the pitch angle of a turbine blade or blades, within a selected adjustment range, to achieve substantially constant turbine speed in response to varying air speed and/or load. The secondary governor preloads the turbine blade or blades to a selected midrange pitch angle in the at-rest condition, wherein the midrange pitch angle is chosen for faster turbine acceleration on deployment to the desired full-speed rotation. The secondary governor controls blade pitch angle until the turbine reaches a selected rotational speed, after which the primary governor regulates and adjusts blade pitch angle within the selected adjustment range.

A vertical windmill employing aerodynamic lift includes stators that form an omnidirectional diffuser and can rotate out of the wind to reduce the destructive tendencies in high winds. A braking mechanism included in the windmill uses rotation of the airfoils to reduce the lift caused by the wind and disengagement of the airfoils to reduce nearly all lift on the airfoils. Centrifugal force is used to activate the brake in high winds, both to slow the rotor speed and, in extreme winds, to stop the rotor. A motor is provided to drive the windmill to simplify controls and increase energy production.
