摘要: A system for producing a mailpiece for delivery in accordance with a Value Added (VA) service. The system comprises a computer processor having Value Added Services (VAS) program code adapted to operate in combination with the processor's print driver code. Further, the VAS program code is operative to receive operator input data in connection with a Value Added Service. Additionally, the system includes at least one peripheral device, operating in combination with the VAS program code, for (i) determining charges in connection with the mailpiece based upon the VA service and (ii) printing VAS data/postage indicia on the mailpiece. In one embodiment of the invention, the system includes a VAS database for collecting VAS data and performing various accounting services (e.g., charge-back, financial tracking) or producing a manifest document when using a Manifest Mailing System. The method includes the steps of attaching the VAS program code to the print driver code and/or registering the VAS code with the peripheral device to establish the location or portal for sending integrated VAS data.

摘要: A method and system for a virtual stamp dispensing metering system is provided wherein indicia of varying values are calculated at a data center and downloaded to a mailing machine on a periodic basis. The mailing machine securely stores the indicia and dispenses the indicia as needed. At the end of the period, any unused indicia are returned to the data center, the user's account is credited, and a new set of indicia are downloaded to the mailing machine. Accordingly, the processing requirements of the meter are reduced, as there is no longer any need to generate digital signatures, an attacker is prevented from generating indicia indefinitely if the security of the meter is compromised, as the cryptographic key is not resident at the meter, and tracking requirements of the meter are reduced, as the meter alone can not be used to generate postage funds.

摘要: A method for using bar code data parsed from a legacy printstream to facilitate electronic processing and electronic document presentment, whereby match code data, page number data, page count data are extracted from bar code data of legacy printstreams to determine what corresponding mail piece data set extracted data belongs to, and alternatively consulting a separate mail run data file as identified in the bar code data in order to find mail piece information to be used in identifying what page data belongs to what mail piece. Integrity and classification of collected data are thereby enhanced by consulting mail piece assembly data and page information included in legacy printstream bar code information.

摘要: In an arrangement for accounting for consumption of a resource, e.g., utilization of a postal service or utilities, a data center (503, 803) periodically communicates with multiple franking systems (100, 505-1, 505-2, 505-n) dispensing postage for the postal service utilization. The data center (503, 803) receives transaction records (301, 303, 305, 307, 309), where a transaction record (301, 303, 305, 307, 309) is associated with each transaction performed by the franking system (100, 505-1, 505-2, 505-n) in each period. Each record (301, 303, 305, 307, 309) includes at least the postage dispensed (305) in the associated franking transaction, and an ascending register value (307) indicating the cumulative postage dispensed. Using the received records (301, 303, 305, 307, 309), the data center (503, 803) assesses the charges during the period and causes assessed charges to be charged to an account associated with the franking system (100, 505-1, 505-2, 505-n). In addition, the data center (503, 803) forwards a copy of the received records (301, 303, 305, 307, 309) to another system (507, 550, 565, 850, 865) for storage, which may be used by the postal authority or utility to audit the charges.

摘要: A method and apparatus for sorting, prioritizing, identifying, managing, and otherwise controlling (collectively, “controlling”) a communication. A frank may be used to associate a value and a class with a communication. The communication may be associated with the frank through the method of selecting a frank associated with a value from among a plurality of frank types, each of the frank types having a pre-assigned value, associating the frank with the communication, and initiating transmission of the franked communication across a network. Value may include anything important of having meaning to the parties, including, for example, money, credit (or a promise to pay), frequent flier miles, and so forth. “Franking” a communication generally associates some indicia of value and/or a service class with a communication.

摘要: A method of electronically consolidating mail items between a plurality of senders and a postal administration that handles delivery of said mail items to their destinations, the method comprising the following steps at the premises of each of the senders: affixing a unique identity code to each of the mail items; and creating a consignment file containing the unique identity code and the address of the destination, and sending said file to a remote central server of a third party entity; and the following steps at said server: consolidating the files received from all of the senders into a single consolidation file; sending a collection order to a mail item collection service so that a collection employee collects the mail items to be sent from the various senders, the collection step also including an input step for inputting said unique identity code at input means and a transmission step for transmitting said code to said remote central server, via a wireless telecommunications network; taking delivery of the mail items after the collection and printing a bar code onto each of them for the purpose of facilitating subsequent sorting of them by the postal administration; and sending said single consolidation file to a server of the postal administration and handing over the mail items to a collection office of the postal administration.

摘要: A system and method to provide identification codes to track outbound mail and corresponding replies. Tracking is enabled where an intended recipient is not determined until after physical components of the mailpiece are assembled. A first ID code is associated with a second ID code on a return envelope. The first ID code is positioned on a front of the return envelope proximal to a return address on the return envelope. The second ID code is positioned on a back of the return envelope proximal to a recipient address region on the return envelope. The return envelope is inserted into a carrier envelope with the front of the return envelope facing the back of the carrier envelope, and the second ID code and the recipient address region being visible through a front window in the front of the carrier envelope. A recipient address is printed in the recipient address region of the reply envelope, through the front window on the carrier envelope. To allow mail piece tracking, the first and second ID codes are associated with the intended recipient of the outbound mail.

摘要: A system and method for tracking a mail piece includes capturing an image of the mail piece, associating a tracking number for the mail piece with the image, providing the mail piece and tracking number to a carrier, and utilizing information from the image to investigate a lack of delivery if no delivery verification is received from the carrier within a certain time period. The system and method may also include extracting information from a portion of the image and presenting the extracted information to a carrier, receiving additional information related to the mail piece from the carrier in response to presenting the extracted information, providing the mail piece, the additional information, and a tracking number for the mail piece to a carrier, inserting the mail piece into a mail stream, and then utilizing information from the image to investigate a lack of delivery if no delivery verification is received from the carrier within a certain time period.
