An AC switch mechanism utilizes a ball contact to which generally linear motion is imparted by a rockable actuator having a spring providing downward contact force and a spring acting ball pusher leg to provide a snap action. In a single pole configuration disclosed as a typical and basic embodiment of the switch, the ball contact in one extreme position engages and extends as a conductive bridging element between bared conductor wires of an electric cable. The cable thus dispenses with the need for assembling separately made switch terminals with the other components of the mechanism. When moved from the "on" position to its other extreme, "off" position, the ball moves onto sloping ramps having a slight, gradual inclination relative to the lengths of the conductor wires. The construction offers a slow break to provide a minimum arc length before the zero point of the AC cycle, a characteristic of great importance in the design and operation of AC switches. Further benefits are obtained by providing a simultaneous two-point break to divide the arc and therefore reduce the arc's outward extension and tracking of the adjacent areas. The design is additionally effective to produce a fast bounce, free make to minimize contact deterioration caused by arcing at the "make" point of the switching cycle. The need for silver alloy contacts is eliminated by providing a continuously moving point of arc termination which cools the contact surface, minimizing the volume of vaporized material, and condenses out the copper vapor during the zero point of the half cycle.

A switch construction including opposed contacts positioned on a base and a bridging sliding contactor slidable between different switch positions. The design of the contacts on the base includes an upper section that defines a first surface engageable by a tab formed on the sliding contactor, and second surface blade portions which provide engagement with wing sections defined on opposite sides of a tab section formed on the sliding contactor. Resilient means press the sliding contactor against this upper section in a fashion such that the wing sections slide over the second surface portions and the tab section engages the first surface portions. The separate engagement of the tab and wing sections provide separate available current paths for the switch; and since either the tab or the wing sections may engage the contact first, arcing is confined to this initial contact area during switch closure. The other section may then act as an inclined plane during switch closure to help lift off the arcing section away from the initial contact area after arcing occurs. The section that is engaged in the maintained state of the switch is thus a clean contact area at which no arcing has occurred. Similarly, upon opening of the switch circuit the initial contact point is also the last point of the sliding contactor that contacts the stationary contact, and thus arcing is again confined to this area.

The switch may be constructed with interchangeable parts to perform various switching functions such as momentary, double-pole single-throw or double-pole double-throw with positive detent action. A slide switch designed for snap action operation thereof having a pivoted rocker arm engaging flexible elements of the insulated slide member of the switch. These flexible elements are formed of material, preferably such as moldable plastic, which has the inherent elastical power of recovering its initially produced durable shape when a deforming force or pressure causing it to be temporarily deformed is removed. The insulated slide member is provided with upwardly projecting lugs which embrace therebetween the pivoted lever arm by which they are outwardly deflected to store up energy for the snap action of the switch. While the free end of the pivoted lever arm is preferably bifurcated to provide it with flexible extremities which are flexed inwardly simultaneously as the slide lugs are outwardly deflected whereby to augment the snap actuating energy stored up by the flexed lugs of the slide member, the lever arm may be formed as a solid member so that the requisite energy is obtained solely by the flexure of the slide lugs.

The present invention relates to a double-throw double-pole switch the design of which requires but a minimum number of parts and a minimum requirement for fasteners, adhesives and the like thereby facilitating ease in manufacture. The switch is additionally well adapted for miniaturization in the form of a microelectronic component known as dual-in-line package (DIP). The poles of the switch are in the form of electrical contacts aligned to provide the well-known opposed pairs of electrical leads for the DIP. A lever or cam for actuating the switch is assembled without the need for conventional fasteners, such as screws or adhesives and the like, thereby permitting rapid manufacture of the switch without the time consumption and skill otherwise required for assembly using such conventional fasteners.
