Abstract: An air bag module includes an inflator for generating gas and an air bag coupled to the inflator and deployable upon generation of gas by the inflator. A pouch is made of a fabric material and serves as both the housing and cover of the module. The pouch has wall portions surrounding the air bag and inflator and defining a pouch interior containing the inflator and the air bag substantially therein such that the inflator and the air bag are housed within the pouch. The pouch also is provided with a frangible seam being breakable to form a pouch deployment opening. Upon air bag deployment, the air bag breaks open the frangible seam of the pouch to permit deployment of the air bag out through the pouch deployment opening such that the pouch guides the air bag during deployment.

Abstract: An air bag module (10) comprises an inflatable vehicle occupant restraint (12), an inflator (18) having first and second axial end walls (64, 66), and a diffuser (20) having first and second end walls (90, 92). A chamber (94) extends between the first and second end walls (90, 92) of the diffuser (20). The first axial end wall (64) of the inflator (18) is supported in the chamber (94) at the first end wall (90) of the diffuser (20), and the second axial end wall (66) of the inflator (18) is supported in the chamber (94) at the second end wall (92) of the diffuser (20). The module (10) further includes an end cap (26) which is fastened to the first end wall (90) of the diffuser (20) in a fastened position. The end cap (26) imparts an axially directed supporting force to the inflator (18). The supporting force urges the inflator (18) axially inward of the chamber (94) at the first end wall (90) of the diffuser (20), and urges the inflator (18) axially outward of the chamber (94) at the second end wall (92) of the diffuser (20).

Abstract: An apparatus for use in forming an air bag assembly 20 including a receptacle 28, an air bag 26, a continuous frame 62, and fastening elements 150. The receptacle 28 has walls 36, 38, 40, 42 and 44 defining an internal cavity 46 in which the air bag 26 is disposed in a folded form and a front opening 48 through which the air bag 26 is deployed. At least some of the walls of the receptacle 28 have a series of holes 142 adjacent the front opening 48. The air bag 26 has a mouth which forms a gas inlet opening and the continuous frame 62 is incorporated into the air bag mouth and secures the air bag 26 to the receptacle 28. The continuous frame 62 is disposed inside the front opening 48 within the internal cavity 46 and includes a series of holes 140 positioned to align with the series of holes 142 in the walls of the receptacle. The fastening elements 150 extend through the series of holes 142 in the walls of the receptacle 28 and through the series of holes 140 in the continuous frame 62 to connect the continuous frame 62 to the walls in a force transmitting relationship.
