The precision of a closed loop control system, for example of a loss-in-weight feeder, having a controlled operating section and a closed loop controlling section, is improved by adjusting the closed loop controlling section with regard to at least two stochastic precision disturbing signals. One such signal may represent disturbances that affect a sensor for ascertaining the actual weight of the scale. The other value may represent estimated bulk material density variations or disturbances. A model generator (7) provides spectra representing these disturbing values. A noise parameter estimator (17) selects those spectra most closely resembling the spectra of the disturbing values for producing an adjusting signal that is used to adapt the closed loop controlling section (5) to an optimal control. The closed loop controlling section (5) has connected thereto an evaluating circuit (14) including the model generator (7) for performing the correction or adjustment.

A powder measuring device and powder measuring mixer in which powder is supplied from a supply hopper to a measuring hopper with its flow rate controlled by a flow regulator associated with the hopper. The weight of the measuring hopper is monitored. A controller compares the measured weight with a target rate to produce a deviation therebetween and a time variation of the deviation. The controller operates according to fuzzy inference to produce a desired flow rate for the next control cycle. This desired flow rate is then supplied to the flow regulator. Several supply hoppers with associated flow regulators can be used. Then the output of the controller is switched between the different flow regulators at different phases of the mixing measurement. Additionally, the measuring hopper can be movable between the different supply hoppers so as to avoid complicated piping.

An apparatus for measuring a travelling fiber lap prior to introduction thereof into a fiber processing textile machine. There is provided a thickness measuring device contacting the fiber lap for mechanically detecting thickness fluctuations thereof. A first transducer is connected to the thickness measuring device for converting mechanical signals into electric signals representing the thickness fluctuations, and a computer is connected to the first transducer for receiving the electric signals from the first transducer and a display device connected to an output of the computer. There are further provided a weighing device for continuously determining the weight of the travelling fiber lap; a second transducer connected to the weighing device and to the computer for applying thereto signals representing the momentary weight of the fiber lap passing through the weighing device; a first fiber lap advancing arrangement situated upstream of the weighing device for advancing the fiber lap to the weighing device; and a second fiber lap advancing arrangement situated downstream of the weighing device for withdrawing the fiber lap from the weighing device.

The present invention is a loss-in-weight feeding system including an accelerometer for detecting extraneous disturbances impinging on the system and preventing the disturbance from adversely affecting the feed rate. A split-beam weighing assembly senses the weight of the material in the container and produces a first signal to control the feed rate. The accelerometer is mounted on the split beam assembly and produces an acceleration signal. The acceleration signal is compared with a predetermined limit, and if the comparison shows a difference beyond a predetermined size, the action of the first signal is inhibited.

A control for loss-in-weight feeders which decreases flow error during refill of the feeder hopper. The weight range (empty to full capacity) of the hopper is divided into weight increments. Samples are taken of the hopper weight during discharge and refill, and each sample is assigned to a weight increment. During discharge, a scale factor related to the density of material in the hopper is computed, assigned to a weight increment and stored in memory; and the hopper feed screw is driven at a speed proportional to the computed scale factor. During refill, the stored scale factors are retrieved from memory and the hopper feed screw is driven at a speed proportional to the stored scale factors; but no additional scale factors are calculated.

An article sensor which defines an opening through which articles to be measured are propelled in a non-supported condition. Bounding the opening are at least two mutually perpendicular arrays of light sources and of photodetectors. The photodetectors constitute the inputs to a microprocessor controlled circuit so that the number and identity of photodetectors that are obscured by a passing article can be determined rapidly thereby enabling plural measurements of articles dimensions to be made during traversal of a single article. The microprocessor can be programmed to compute the volume of an article, the weight of an article or virtually any other characteristic of an article. A circuit for controlling and interrogating the photodetectors which permits interrogation of the photodetectors at a rate corresponding to that at which the microprocessor operates. The circuit in a first phase of operation senses the voltage drop across the phototransistor without significantly discharging current carriers from the base of the transistor and in a second phase totally discharges the base in preparation for a succeeding measurement so that determination of the condition of the photodetectors is achieved rapidly and accurately.

The device has a U-shaped deflection yoke between the tremie and the conveyor which deflects under the weight of the tremie to close switches and actuate the appropriate safety device.
