摘要: Strengthened and toughened ceramic composite bodies are achieved through the use of a silicon boride composition of silicon borides and borides of the form Si-B-C. This strengthening and hardening is achieved when the silicon boride composition is present over a wide range, although a preferred amount is about 20 wt. %. This strengthening and toughening occurs for oxides, carbides, nitrides, and mixtures thereof, for example. One silicon boride composition for this application is silicon hexaboride. Further enhancement is achieved by the addition of up to about 25 wt. % carbon in the silicon hexaboride. Accordingly, the preferred silicon boride composition is a Si-B-C composition, with carbon being added to SiB.sub.6, for example.

摘要: A method is disclosed for treating tissue in response to a stimulus generated by the tissue. In one embodiment, the method transdermally treats an organism in response to a stimulus. In this embodiment, the medication is applied to epidermis of the organism, and the epidermis is electroporated in response to a stimulus, whereby the medication passes through the epidermis at a rate sufficient to alter the stimulus, thereby transdermally treating the organism. In another embodiment, the method measures a blood component content of blood. A portion of epidermis is electroporated to cause an aqueous fluid to be directed through an electroporated epidermis to a surface of the epidermis. Thereafter, the blood component content of the aqueous fluid is measured for correlation with a known aqueous fluid blood component content associated with a known concentration of blood component in the blood. The blood component concentration of the blood can thereby be measured. In still another embodiment, the method includes directing a medication to the tissue which can alter the stimulus when the tissue is electroporated, and electroporating the tissue in response to a stimulus, whereby the medication passes through the tissue in an amount sufficient to alter the stimulus, thereby treating the organism.

摘要: A method for the preparation of ceramic composites containing at least aluminum oxide and aluminum boride, and the composite materials that result from the method. Intimate mixtures of finely-divided powdered aluminum metal and anhydrous boric oxide, with ratios (by weight) of about 0.5 to twenty parts of aluminum metal to one part of boric oxide, are subjected to a temperature to cause a complete reaction between the starting materials. If the ratio is above about 1.25 parts of aluminum to one part of boric oxide, the resultant product will include aluminum in addition to the aluminum oxide and aluminum boride. The ratio is selected to provide the desired hardness and toughness. Ratios between about 1 and 1.2 provide a composite having the highest hardness, with greater amounts of aluminum metal providing increased toughness. Several compositions are described, with hot pressing typically being used to provide the desired heating cycle. Typically, the mixed powders are hot pressed at about 1500 and 1600 degrees C. for about 45 minutes at 6000 psi to produce a product approaching 100% theoretical density. When additional strength is desired, various reinforcing materials can be added to the base mixture, with these reinforcing materials typically being ceramic fibers, whiskers and platelets. The resultant materials will have application as cutting tools, wear parts, armor, insualtion, etc. High yields are achieved, and the method is inexpensive.

摘要: An integrated control mechanism for an electric fishing motor (10). The electric fishing motor (10) has a motor tube (11) with a propulsion unit (12) secured to one end and a control head (16) mounted on the other end. An articulation assembly (35) has a frame portion (36) secured to the housing (28) of the control head (16) and a bracket portion (38) attached to the motor tube (11). The assembly (56) which effects the pivotal connection between the frame and bracket portions (36, 38) also accommodates selectively positioning the control head (16) radially about the axis (58) of the motor tube (11). A tiller (60) is secured to the frame portion (36), and an on/off switch (89) is operatively connected between the frame and bracket portion (36, 38) such that vertical manipulation of the tiller (60) articulates the assembly (35) to actuate the on/off switch (89). Rotation of the tiller (60 ) about its own axis actuates a rotary switch assembly (125) to operate a speed control circuit (150) whereby to select the desired speed for the electric fishing motor, and movement of the tiller (60) within a horizontal plane turns the propulsion unit (12) about the axis (58) of the motor tube (11) to steer the electric fishing motor (10). A "dead-man" arrangement (96), and a "dead-man" override (101, 103) are also provided.

摘要: The invention is directed to a method for obtaining pulsed metal vapor laser transitions. The method comprises placing a metal halide of the desired metal within an enclosure and vaporizing the metal halide to provide a metal halide vapor. The metal halide vapor is thereafter dissociated to provide ground state metal atoms of sufficient number density to create a condition for resonance trapping and, substantially simultaneously therewith, ground state metal atoms are excited to an upper laser level, while maintaining a sufficient number in the ground state to preserve said resonance radiation trapping condition, with electrons sufficiently energized to create a population inversion between the upper and lower laser level. The excited metal atom is permitted to emit laser radiation by stimulated emission to a lower laser level and the emission is resonated, preferably between a pair of externally mounted mirrors. The metal atom is permitted to relax from the lower laser level to ground state and the aforementioned steps are repeated.
