Abstract: Invert emulsion drilling fluids having a combination of fatty acids derived from waste vegetable oil (WVO) and a fatty amine as a rheology modifier are provided. An invert emulsion drilling fluid may include a water in oil emulsion, an invert emulsifier, a fatty amine having six to thirty carbon atoms, and a fatty acid having six to eighteen carbon atoms. The fatty acid is provided by esterifying a waste vegetable oil to produce a methyl ester of the waste vegetable oil and cleaving an ester group from the methyl ester of the waste vegetable oil. The invert emulsion drilling fluid may be formulated free of organoclay. Methods of drilling a wellbore using an invert emulsion drilling fluid are also provided.

Abstract: A method for plugging and sealing subsurface formations using alkaline nanosilica dispersion and a delayed activation chemistry is disclosed. In accordance with one embodiment of the present disclosure, the method includes introducing a mixture with a first pH into the subsurface formation. The mixture comprises an aqueous solution, an alkaline nanosilica dispersion and a water-insoluble hydrolyzable compound. The method further includes allowing the water-insoluble hydrolyzable compound to hydrolyze in the subsurface formation to form an acid at 70° C. or greater, thereby acidizing the mixture to a reduced second pH and causing the alkaline nanosilica dispersion to gel into a solid and seal the subsurface formation. A composition for sealing a subsurface formation is also disclosed. The composition includes an aqueous mixture including water, an alkaline nanosilica dispersion, and a water-insoluble hydrolyzable compound.

Abstract: A lost circulation material (LCM) composition for sealing a lost circulation zone in a wellbore is disclosed that includes from 50 weight percent to 97 weight percent epoxy resin and from 2 weight percent to 30 weight percent curing agent. The epoxy resin may include at least one of 2,3-epoxypropyl o-tolyl ether, alkyl glycidyl ethers having from 12 to 14 carbon atoms, bisphenol-A-epichlorohydrin epoxy resin, or a compound having formula (OC2H3)—CH2—O—R1—O—CH2—(C2H3O), where R1 is a linear or branched hydrocarbyl having from 4 to 24 carbon atoms. A method for isolating a lost circulation zone using the LCM compositions is also disclosed and includes introducing a spacer fluid to the lost circulation zone, introducing the LCM composition to the lost circulation zone, and curing the LCM composition in the lost circulation zone to isolate the lost circulation zone.

Abstract: A method for controlling loss circulation. The method includes introducing into a wellbore a nanosilica drilling fluid comprising water, an alkaline nanosilica dispersion, and at least one additive. The method further includes introducing into the nanosilica drilling fluid an amount of a chemical activator comprising a water soluble hydrolysable polyester to produce a convertible drilling mud where the convertible drilling mud has an initial pH between 8 and 11 upon formation. The method also includes allowing the chemical activator to hydrolyze to produce an acid and reduce the pH of the convertible drilling mud to less than a gel pH, thereby converting the convertible drilling mud into a solid gel lost circulation material. A convertible drilling mud operable to convert into a solid gel lost circulation material is also provided.
