摘要: A combination irrigation and temperature control system for plants and the like, includes a spray producing fitting connected at its opposite ends with a water conduit and an air conduit, respectively. The fitting has a chamber therein into which air under pressure flows and a plurality of air openings in the side thereof, through which the air exits the chamber under pressure. The fitting includes separate areas on the outer surface thereof over which water is caused to flow in thin sheets, and the air openings extend through these areas, so that jets of air exiting the openings intercept the sheets of water and produce either a fine mist or fog or a spray of water droplets, depending upon the air pressure, whereby the fog produced can be used to provide a cover blanket to prevent or block heat radiation from leaf and soil surfaces, and the spray can be used to coat the leaf surfaces, whereby the latent heat of converting the spray to liquid and the liquid to ice warms the leaves to prevent freezing thereof. The system operates at low water pressure and uses very little water, and is thus exceptionally economical.

摘要: A nozzle and method for generating a foamed liquid includes a nozzle body, a plurality of spaced orifices forming discrete jets of a liquid foam producing agent in an elongate passage in the nozzle body, and a solid surface defined in the body upon which the jets impinge. Gas inlet openings introduce gas into the passage and the gas and liquid foam producing agent are intimately mixed by deflection of the latter from the solid surface to produce foam in the passage.

摘要: Control of the temperature and humidity of an environment is obtained by injecting a large volume of water droplets into the air with a major portion of the water droplets being in the range of from about 5 to 50 microns in diameter and with an average diameter in the range of from about 10 to 30 microns. In one embodiment such environmental control is employed for cooling an outdoors area wherein the droplets provide evaporative cooling. When temperatures are low a fog of water droplets essentially opaque to infrared is provided as a cover to crops for preventing frost damage. In another embodiment means for injecting water droplets are arranged within a roofed shelter having sides open at the top and bottom for permitting air circulation. In another embodiment a visible cloud is provided for decorative effect or as a medium on which an image can be projected. Fog having droplets in the above-mentioned size range is produced by impacting a stream of water having a diameter in the range of from about 125 to 400 microns at a velocity in excess of about 135 feet per second against a smooth, solid surface. Such impact causes the stream of water to separate into droplets in the selected size range. In one embodiment a nozzle having an orifice in the range of from about 125 to 400 micron diameter and operated at a pressure in excess of about 350 psi is used to create a water jet. A flat surface having substantially the same diameter as the orifice, normal to the orifice, closely aligned with the orifice, and spaced only a short distance from the orifice is employed for impacting the stream coming out of the orifice. In another embodiment a surface having compound convexity is arranged in front of the orifice at a distance of up to about four millimeters. A complete system involves a large plurality of such nozzles supplied with water substantially free of particles having a size larger than about 1/10 the diameter of the orifice, and at a pressure in excess of about 350 psi. Automatic control of such a system in response to temperature and wind velocity and direction is also provided.

摘要: The equipment comprises a novel spray head unit adapted to form a fog or fine misty spray at moderate liquid pressures by reason of high internal turbulence in the approach channel to the controlled gap where the liquid is broken up. Adaptations include below-ground head units which are self-elevating and normally elevated heads designed to form a frost-preventing mist above the tops of fruit trees and other vegetation in freezing weather. The equipment is useful to form snow or ice, e.g. for ski areas, to extinguish fires, etc.
