    摘要: A method adjusts a flying-height distance between a magnetic write head and a magnetic medium. The method includes positioning the write head in a location spaced from the magnetic medium by the flying-height distance. The write head includes a magnetic yoke and a proximal region in proximity to the magnetic medium. The write head further includes a resistive heater and at least a portion of the resistive heater is within the magnetic yoke and is in proximity to the proximal region. The resistive heater is configured to heat the proximal region. The proximal region has a coefficient of thermal expansion. The proximal region is configured to expand and to contract in response to a temperature of the proximal region. The method further includes flowing an electric current through the resistive heater. The method further includes controlling the electric current to adjust the temperature of the proximal region to selectively expand and contract the proximal region and thereby control the flying-height distance. Controlling the electric current includes pulsing the electrical current and adjusting a time interval between pulses.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for embedding a chip in a substrate to form a composite air bearing surface. An example of the method includes securing the substrate in a fixed position, aligning the chip in a first direction with a chip receiving slot in the substrate, depositing adhesive in the chip receiving slot, and aligning the chip in a second direction with the chip receiving slot. The chip is pushed into the adhesive in the chip receiving slot until the air bearing surface of the chip is substantially at a desired protrusion in a third direction in relation to the air bearing surface of the substrate. The adhesive is cured with the air bearing surface of the chip substantially at the desired protrusion in the third direction, and with the chip substantially aligned in the first and second directions with chip receiving slot.

    摘要: A method of burnishing a rear pad of a slider within a disk drive. The rear pad is formed of a burnishable material and maintains elements for reading and writing. The disk drive further includes a spindle motor rotatably driving a disk and an actuator assembly positioning the slider over a surface of the disk. With this in mind, the method includes rotating the disk. The slider is moved in a radial fashion relative to the disk surface in a reciprocal fashion, causing the rear pad to rock. As the rear pad rocks, contact between the rear pad and the disk surface burnishes the rear pad. As a result, a positive camber is imparted in the rear pad relative to the MR element. The above-described method can be practiced following initial manufacture of the disk drive, or at various times over the life of the disk drive. Regardless, the method is practiced in-situ and is therefore very fast, cheap, and adapts quickly to the particular disk in which the slider is flying.

    摘要: A tape head assembly for high-speed and high-density multi-channel read-while-writing (RWW) operation comprises two modules bonded together. The modules are initially formed on an integral unit and gapped in pair, to produce a good reference surface, which insures that the finished head assembly will meet tight azimuth and gap tolerances. The unit is then machined to two separate the modules. Further processing involves individually machining the head surface of each module to achieve desired contours. The machined modules are tested and brought together in the positional arrangement required to form the final head assembly. In disclosed embodiments, the overall contour enables the assembly to skive air and debris off a surface of the magnetic tape before passage of the tape over the transducers. The contour allows the tape to fly over outriggers, but contacts regions at or around the transducers with a low constant contact pressure during RWW operation.
