The character selecting mechanism comprises a plurality of electromagnetic clutches each having a solenoid, a sleeve rotatably received in the center hole of the solenoid and rotated continuously during a printing cycle, and a pair of selector plates resiliently pressed against the opposite end surfaces of the sleeve, respectively, so as to be attracted to the sleeve and to be turned by the sleeve when the solenoid is energized, having tongues facing opposite to each other to form part of a magnetic path for the magnetic lines of force of the solenoid with a small gap therebetween and in contact with each other through a small contact area. Each electromagnetic clutch controls a pair of type wheel units to stop the respective type wheels of the pair of type wheel units individually to position the selected characters of the type wheels at the printing position. Small projections are formed either in one of the opposite surfaces of the tongues or in both the opposite surfaces of the tongues so that the tongues are in contact with each other through a small contact area so that the selector plates are able to be turned individually.

The electronic typewriter is of the `daisywheel` type and comprises a microprocessor, a stepping selector motor controlled by a position register for positioning the daisywheel 28, and a support frame for a correction ribbon. The support frame is arranged to oscillate from a down position for viewing purposes to an up position for the correction operation. A tab (104) moves up and down with the frame. The daisywheel rotates together with a sleeve member 97 provided with a stop seat 98. The tab (104), in the up position, urges a tooth (99) on a lever (101) into interference with the sleeve member (97), via a resiliently yielding blade (107) of the lever (101). During the correction cycles, rotary movement of the daisywheel (28) takes place when the support frame and hence the tab (104) is in its own position and thus without any obstacle. In the initialization phase, the microprocessor raises the support frame and tab (104) in advance of a command for complete rotation of the daisywheel (28). This causes the tooth (99) to engage into the seat (98) and stops the daisywheel in its zero position. The position register is then loaded with a code corresponding to the zero position of the daisywheel, thereby being synchronized to the angular position thereof.

A small printer using character wheels is provided. The printer includes a plurality of character wheels frictionally mounted on a shaft for rotation therewith and having a ratchet wheel on side surface. Associated with each character wheel is a pivotable selector pawl actuatable by an electromagnet. The number of electromagnets is less than the number of selector pawls and character wheels. Stopper cams are actuatable into locking engagement with the ratchet wheels on even-numbered character wheels when the shaft begins to rotate. Only odd-numbered character wheels are caused to rotate with the shaft. The desired characters on the odd-numbered character wheels are selected when the electromagnets are energized selectively to move the selector pawls into locking engagement with the ratchets on the odd-numbered character wheels. During the next revolution of the shaft, the stoppers are retracted, that is, out of engagement with the ratchets on the even-numbered type wheels. Accordingly, the even-numbered character wheels are then caused to rotate with the shaft for selection.

The printer includes a plurality of print characters circumferentially disposed therearound, the print characters being selectively positioned in a print position by rotating the print ring from a rest position to a print position during each print cycle. A motor is adapted to be energized to rotate the print rings from a rest position to a print position during each print cycle. The instant invention is particularly characterized by a detection arrangement for detecting the rotary position of the print rings and generating a character selection timing signal representative of each of the rotational positions of the print ring. A print selection arrangement is associated with each of the print rings for selectively positioning same at predetermined print positions during each print cycle in response to the character selection timing signal produced by the detection arrangement being applied thereto. The detection arrangement is further adapted to detect the rotary position of the print rings and generate a reference signal that is distinct from the character position timing signal produced during each print cycle, the motor being utilized to rotatably drive the print rings being deenergized in response to the reference signal being applied thereto.

Each ring has associated therewith a pawl and a selecting mechanism for engaging the pawl with a selected groove on the printing type ring whereby a selected character on the ring may be brought to an inking position and then to a printing position. Retraction of the pawl by said printing mechanism disengages the pawl and allows the ring to reach a rest or stand-by position.By the use of the retractable pawl a printing device is provided in which only those rings which are about to be used for printing are rotated, and the load on the inking mechanism is greatly decreased. The printing device may therefore be decreased in size and in energy consumption and the wear on the various members of said device is greatly decreased.

Line printer having a plurality of rotatable printing rings coaxially arranged adjacent each other and carrying on the peripheries thereof a plurality of characters for the printing and a movable roller pad adapted to abut against the printing rings at the predetermined printing position so that the selected characters of the printing rings held at the printing position are simultaneously printed on a paper held between the printing rings and the roller pad so as to form simultaneously a line of printing thereon in each printing cycle. The printing rings are rotated in the same direction in each printing cycle in order to eliminate a complicated mechanism for reciprocally driving the printing rings. The selection of the characters, temporary arresting of the same at the printing position and the printing operation by the roller pad are effected during a first half cycle of each printing cycle while the paper feeding and the releasing of the characters from the printing position are effected during the last half cycle of each printing cycle by way of a single common driving shaft.
