Provided is a platen roller retaining structure which is small, of a simple construction and easily allows attachment/detachment of a platen roller and which provides a high level of reliability in terms of platen roller retention. A shaft portion (2a) of a platen roller (2) is fitted into a connecting portion (3a) of a regulating member (3), and the shaft portion (2a) and an engagement portion (3b) of the regulating member (3) are respectively inserted into a first recess (5) and a second recess (6) of a stationary frame (4), with an outer peripheral portion (2b) of the platen roller (2) being held in contact with a thermal head (1) to make recording possible. Escape of the shaft portion (2a) from the first recess (5) in direction (A) is prevented by an inner peripheral edge (5a). Escape of the shaft portion (2a) toward an opening portion (5b) in direction (B) without being obstructed by the inner peripheral edge (5a) is prevented since the engagement portion (3b) abuts an inner peripheral edge (6a) and cannot move indirection (B). Removal of the platen roller (2) is possible only when the engagement portion (3b) has been caused to escape in direction (C) from the second recess (6), with the shaft portion (2a) being kept retained within the first recess (5).

A print control device applicable to a printer or similar equipment and capable of maintaining the absolute printing amount of a cut sheet constant with no regard to the thickness and hardness of the sheet. A work RAM (Random Access Memory) stores various kinds of data and sheet size parameters received via an interface control. The work RAM has a line feed counter for counting the lines fed from the leading edge of a sheet in absolute value, and a sheet end counter for counting the lines fed after the end of the sheet has been detected. A CPU (Central Processing Unit) controls the printer in conformity to the programs stored in a control ROM (Read Only Memory) and determines the last line to be printed on the basis of the sheet size parameters and the outputs of the two counters of the work RAM.

A media transport system for controlling the position and velocity of media in a document production apparatus marking engine having a media positioning system driven by a motor, includes a motion control loop to control the motor; a sensor adapted to detect the position of the media and to create a trigonometric signal characteristic of the position of the media, the trigonometric signal comprising frequency and phase components; a resolver electronics subsystem adapted to trigonometrically process the trigonometric signal to create a resolved signal; and means for comparing the resolved signal to a reference clock signal of predetermined frequency and phase to provide an error signal used to control the motor that drives the media positioning system. The trigonometric signal may include a sine portion and a cosine portion. The sine portion of the trigonometric signal is sin(.omega..sub.e *t+.phi..sub.e) and the cosine portion of the trigonometric signal is cos(.omega..sub.e *t+.phi..sub.e); where .omega..sub.e is the trigonometric signal frequency component, .phi..sub.e is the trigonometric signal phase component, and t is the time. The resolver electronics subsystem may include a first multiplier adapted to output the product of the sine portion of the trigonometric signal and a reference cosine command cos(.omega..sub.r *t+.phi..sub.r); a second multiplier adapted to output the product of cosine portion of the trigonometric signal and a reference sine command sin(.omega..sub.r *t+.phi..sub.r), where .omega..sub.r is the frequency of the reference command and .phi..sub.r is the phase of the reference command; and means to add the outputs of the first and second multipliers.

An occurring positioning error is electronically corrected during the positioning of edge-perforated continuous form paper (10) in a print position (PP) relative to a print station (13) of a printing device (1). Edge perforation holes (EH1 . . . EHv) on the continuous form paper (10) are scanned for the electronic correction and the positioning error is determined for a block (B1 . . . Bm . . . Bu) of the continuous form paper (10). The positioning error is composed in this case for each block (B1 . . . Bm . . . Bu) of at least one slippage value (Sv-1, Sv) as well as of a residual error (RE1 . . . REm . . . REu). While the slippage value (SVv-1, SVv) for a block (Bm) is corrected immediately, a residual error (REm) is taken into consideration during the correction of the position error for a next following block (Bm+1). In addition to the electronic correction of the positioning error, determined for the block (B1 . . . Bm . . . Bu), the positioning process is surveyed relative to interventions (I). If for example an intervention (I) is determined during the positioning of the single block (Bm), then the positioning error is determined anew.

In a printer assembly including a printhead which moves in a first direction for printing on a sheet of paper, roller means having an outer cylindrical periphery that engages the sheet of paper at successive tangent points on the periphery for moving the paper in a second perpendicular direction, and driving means for rotating the roller means, an apparatus for correcting certain pre-established errors in the positioning of the sheet of paper by the roller means is described. The apparatus comprises means for controlling the driving means such that the driving means rotates the roller means in order to move the sheet of paper in a way which eliminates the pre-established errors. An arrangement for determining certain pre-established errors in the positioning of the sheet of paper by the roller means is also described. The arrangement comprises light reflecting means coupled to the roller means, light emitting and sensing means for projecting a beam of light onto the light reflecting means while the roller means is rotating, and for measuring radius at the successive tangent points on the entire periphery of the roller means to determine the pre-established errors, and storage means for storing data corresponding to the pre-established errors measured by the light emitting and sensing means. A method for correcting certain pre-established errors in the positioning of the sheet of paper by the roller means and a method for determining the certain pre-established errors in the positioning of the sheet of paper by the roller means are also described.

The system includes a microprocessor and a position counter that counts either 1/4 or 1 degree displacement pulses generated by a motion indicating means including optical transducers and an emitter disk coupled to the motors. The motion indicating means includes an error hold and compensation counter that counts and stores 1/4 degree pulses generated during error movement of the motors relative to a stop position during the uncontrolled state and supplies a corrected 1 degree pulse to the position counter upon start up.

An indexing mechanism for a typewriter provides a signal controlled transfer to a fast paper advance rate, say for semi-automatic paper insertion, while storing the last operator-selected rate. Two cams are employed which influence, through a follower, the engagement point of a pawl of a pawl and ratchet platen drive. One cam is operator positionable to change the portion of its cam profile that is tracked by the follower and, attendantly, the paper advance rate. By arranging a signal-controlled actuator to deflect the positionable cam from operative engagement with the follower, the outer cam, which has a less prominent profile, is enabled to influence the pawl engagement point and provides high speed paper advance. Upon removal of the actuator signal the positionable cam is automatically returned to its operative position i.e., the last operator selected position.
