A magnetic field sensor element comprises an elongated core of high-magnetic permeability material having a coil of electrically-conductive wire wound around and along a central axis of the core. The sensor, due to inductance of the core which changes with application of a local magnetic field, exhibits a characteristic of delaying an electrical input as a function of the strength of a magnetic field in the direction of the axis of the core, and the delay is measured as a function of the strength of the magnetic field. Appropriate circuitry provides at least one step-function voltage input to the coil such that the resulting delay in current charge-up into the coil creates a voltage across the coil which decays to a known reference value. The time delay for the voltage decaying to the reference value varies as a monotonic function with the strength of the applied magnetic field to be measured.

A wireless compass for vehicles includes a compass sensor installed in a first location of a vehicle. The compass sensor sends information regarding the heading of the vehicle via a wireless transmitter. A compass display includes a complementary wireless receiver which receives the data from the compass sensor. The compass display and receiver are located at a second location convenient for the driver. The display displays the heading of the vehicle based upon the data received from the compass sensor.

This application discloses apparatus for logging the operation of a valve (10) of the type having a spindle (16) rotatable by a key (20) to effect opening and closing thereof, the apparatus including operative means (36) which are in use carried on a key (20), the operative means being operable independently of any other apparatus or electronic equipment to detect rotary motion of the key during operation of the valve. Preferably, the operative means includes sensor means (40, 42) sensitive to the earth's magnetic field, and is operative to determine rotation of the key by analysis of signals generated by the sensor means. By detecting valve operation with operative means on a key, the expense of providing detection apparatus for each valve is avoided (the total number of keys being much less than the total number of valves), as is the need to provide potentially delicate equipment in the hostile environs of the valves.

Dual pendulum-DETF force sensing accelerometers have integrated conductor coils on the pendulums that circulate alternating current to cause an additional pendulum motion also sensed by the DETF transducers for sensing local earth magnetic field. The integrated magnetic and acceleration sensing is used for each of three reference axes in a triaxial inclinometer magnetometer for borehole drill steering and surveying.

A triaxial magnetic heading sensing apparatus includes nulling coils and netoresistive sensors having inputs and outputs. The nulling coils are arranged in parallel relation to three orthogonal planes intersecting at a common center point. The sensors are disposed along orthogonal axes in parallel relation to the orthogonal planes and in close proximity to the center point. Each sensor has a bridge configuration balanced in the absence of an applied external magnetic field and unbalanced in the presence one. Also, a signal generator is connected to the inputs of the sensors for exciting the sensors with a bipolar voltage waveform exhibiting alternating positive and negative voltage polarities punctuated by "off" states of zero volts. Further, a voltage integrator and low pass filter are connected in series with the output of a respective one of the sensors for generating an error signal representative of an imbalance due to the presence of an applied external magnetic field and for coupling the input and output of each nulling coil and of each sensor into a servo control loop such that each sensor is driven by the error signal to a magnetic nulling condition with zero steady state error. A pick-off resistor is connected to the output of the low pass filter for outputting a representation of the nulling current to provide a measure of the applied external magnetic field.

A scaling system and technique which employs an analog-to-digital converter having at least 10-bit accuracy and a ranging circuit to compensate for abnormally large vehicle magnetic fields. The ranging circuit employs variable resistance negative feedback, which enables an electronic compass system to reduce the output voltage of an integrator to within the fixed output voltage range of the integrator. An analog-to-digital converter of at least 10-bit accuracy makes resolution of heading information possible and enhances the accuracy of subsequently performed calibrations.

A method and apparatus for interpreting magnetic directions for an electronic compass system mounted on a moving vehicle such as an automobile. The directions of North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, Southwest, West and Northwest are each assigned predetermined degree ranges which are included in a look-up table used by a controller. The predetermined degree ranges associated with the directions of North, South, East and West are further each set at equal values, while the predetermined degree ranges of Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest are set equally at a value that is less than the values of the North, South, East and West directions. A flux-gate senses the Earth's magnetic field and generates an analog signal in accordance therewith. The analog signal is converted into a corresponding digital signal by an analog-to-digital converter. The controller receives the corresponding digital signal and converts the digital signal into a degree heading. The controller then compares the degree heading with the eight predetermined degree ranges included in the look-up table and generates a directional heading signal in accordance with the predetermined degree range within which the degree heading falls. A directional heading signal is then output to a visual display and displayed as one of the eight directional headings associated with the eight predetermined degree ranges. The invention thus simplifies the interpretation of heading information generated by an electronic compass system and reduces the chance of driver confusion by interpreting heading information more in accordance with the major geographic directions of North, South, East and West.
