摘要: 531,847. Making hollow-ware. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd. Aug. 3, 1939, No. 22547. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1938. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion. -In circumferentially welding the two cup-shaped sections of a metallic vessel, such as a stainless steel liner for a metal barrel for containing foodstuffs, one of the sections of which has a hole in its side, the sections are abutted, and a nozzle, through which a non-oxidizing gas such as nitrogen or hydrogen is passed, is inserted through the hole and positioned in the plane of the edges of the sections for supplying a non- oxydizing atmosphere to the inner surface of the seam. Welding is effected by an external atomic or like welding head. The sections 18, 22 are respectively secured near the seam by arcuate pads 17, 21 or arms 16, 19 mounted on heads 14, 15 rotated through gearing from a driving-shaft. The head 15 is carried by a slide 13. Welding is effected by an adjustable stationary atomic welding head 28. The non-oxydizing gas is supplied to the inner surface of the seam through a curved tube 31 passed through the bung hole 23 in the section 18 and connected at its outer end to a tubular member 33 having a semi-spherical ball end 34 on which is mounted a socket 37 carrying the nozzle 42 for applying the gas to the underside of the seam. If the gas is combustible it ignites. The socket is pressed against the ball end 34 by a spring-pressed cover plate 39 and the nozzle 42 is maintained by a weight 43 in a vertical position under the welding head in all positions of the tube 31 which is carried by the rotatable head 14. The tube 31 is mounted in a block 32 connected by bolts 52 and nuts 55 to a pair of blocks 48, 49 secured to the pads 17 around the bung hole, the gas being supplied from a flexible tube 53 through passages in the blocks 48, 32. The fused metal is compressed after welding by a roller 61 carried by a lever 62 connected by toggle levers 64, 65 to an operating lever 66. By tilting the completed lining the tubes 31, 42 are brought into parallelism or contact and may be withdrawn through the bung hole.
