Abstract: A tiling display system has multiple display panels. The display panels may be positioned by positioners that are coupled to the display panels. In an untiled operating mode, the display panels of the tiling display system are moved apart. In this mode, each display panel can display different content such as different static images of artwork. In a tiled operating mode, the display panels of the tiling system are moved together to form a single display that displays a single still or moving image. Components on the backs of the display panels and/or along the edges of the display panels may be used to facilitate panel-to-panel alignment, to help couple adjacent panels together, and to support the transfer of power and/or data signals among the panels. The components may include optical and/or electrical alignment sensors, magnets for alignment and coupling, and transmitters and receivers for transmitting and receiving signals.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a display such as an organic light-emitting diode display. The display may have an active area formed from an array of pixels with light-emitting diodes. The light-emitting diodes may be formed from an organic layer containing emissive material between an anode layer and a cathode layer. Apertures may be formed in the active area of the display. The apertures may allow light to pass to light-sensitive components under the display. A polarizer may overlap the display and may have a bleached area that forms part of a camera aperture. Light may pass through the camera aperture to a camera under the display. The display may have an array of apertures that allow light to pass to a light-sensitive fingerprint sensor under the display.

Abstract: A head-mounted device may include a display that generates content and an optical system through which the content is viewable. The head-mounted device may include a lighting system that illuminates a periphery of the optical system. When the user places the device on his or her head in a brightly lit environment, control circuitry may operate the lighting system to provide bright illumination to the user's peripheral vision. The lighting system may gradually decrease in brightness until the user transitions from a bright-adapted state to a dark-adapted state. When the user is partially or fully dark-adapted, the lighting system may be turned off and the display may be turned on. In some arrangements, an ambient light sensor may measure ambient light conditions outside of the electronic device and the control circuitry may control the lighting system based on the ambient lighting conditions.

Abstract: A lens module in a head-mounted device may include a fluid-filled chamber, a semi-rigid lens element that at least partially defines the fluid-filled chamber, and at least one actuator configured to selectively bend the semi-rigid lens element. The semi-rigid lens element may become rigid along a first axis when the lens element is curved along a second axis perpendicular to the first axis. Six actuators that are evenly distributed around the periphery of the semi-rigid lens element may be used to control the curvature of the semi-rigid lens element. The semi-rigid lens element may initially be planar or non-planar. For example, the semi-rigid lens element may initially have a spherically convex surface and a spherically concave surface. A tunable spherical lens may be incorporated into the lens module to offset a parasitic spherical lens power from the semi-rigid lens element.

Abstract: Aspects of the subject technology relate to electronic devices with displays. The display includes an array of display pixels and one or more display-light sensors that monitor the display light generated by the display pixels. Using the display-light sensors, corrections to control signals for the display pixels can be provided to correct for array non-uniformities and/or pixel degradation over time. The display-light sensors may be provided in an array of display-light sensors mounted parallel to the array of display pixels. The array of display-light sensors can be in-plane with the display pixels or vertically displaced from the display pixels. The display-light sensors may be prevented from receiving non-display light such as ambient light.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display mounted in a housing. Color ambient light sensors may make measurements of ambient light intensity and color through windows in an inactive border region of the display or other portions of the device. The electronic device may process the ambient light measurements based on ambient light information from the ambient light sensors and based on information from additional sensors such as an image sensor, a force sensor, a capacitive touch sensor, a proximity sensor, an orientation sensor, and other devices. Control circuitry in the electronic device may produce reliable ambient light measurements by combining readings from multiple reliable sources and by discarding readings from ambient light sensors that are blocked by a user's fingers or other external objects. Display color cast and intensity may be adjusted based on ambient light information.

Abstract: Aspects of the subject technology relate to gaze-dependent visual encryption of electronic device displays. Each display frame that is displayed on the electronic device display may include a clear-display region around the user's gaze location and an obscured region outside the clear-display region. In this way, only the display content that the user is actively viewing is recognizable and understandable and an onlooker such as an unwanted observer looking over the user's shoulder is unable to understand what is displayed. The obscured region of each display frame may be generated such that the overall look and structure of that region is unchanged, but the content is unintelligible. In this way, the visual experience of the user is not disrupted or distracted by the visual encryption and the eye of the onlooker is not guided to the clear-display region by the visual encryption.
