The input image data is scanned in a square block unit of M×N pixels, and blocks that satisfy specific conditions is detected based on the scanning process. In one example, a ratio of white pixels and black pixels falls within scanned blocks is used as the specific condition to detect those blocks. According to the image processing method, it can be accurately determined whether a rectangular block unit area includes a steganographic code by using a steganographic feature value to determine the type of a code included in the rectangular block unit area.

The present invention relates to an image display control unit comprising a screen size information obtaining section, an image information obtaining section for obtaining information on vertical and horizontal sizes of an image, an arithmetic section for calculating an image magnification ratio so that at least one of the vertical and horizontal sizes of the image substantially conforms with at least one of vertical and horizontal display-possible sizes of a display screen, and a display control section for displaying the image at the magnification ratio calculated in the arithmetic section on the display screen. With this arrangement, in displaying an image on a display screen, the image can be displayed automatically at the optimal magnification ratio on the display screen. Accordingly, the wasteful use of the display screen is avoidable, and the image appears on the display screen in an easy-to-see condition.

While vertical and horizontal white skipping being performed, in the other regions, regions are detected in which pixel values change in smooth fashion, such as the outlines of letters and encoding is performed using the pixel value of the leading column of the region, number of columns and amount of change of the pixel values. As a result, the compression factor of the image can be increased and a considerable contribution made to reduce the storage capacity for storage of data and reduce the time required for data transmission.
