Apparatus and method for forming a self-standing skirt on the pressure bottom of a blow-molded carbonated beverage container. The preform is formed with an annular depending skirt, and the skirt is stretched with a stretch mechanism which engages all but a lower portion of the preform, so that during the stretching of the preform concurrently with the blowing of the preform in a bottle mold, the lower portion folds inwardly to form a bottom ledge on the stretched skirt. The mold is provided with a centering mechanism for assuring the centering of the preform within the mold cavity to assure that the preform skirt receives the skirt stretching mechanism.

A preform (10) for producing a plastic preform for forming blow molded plastic containers which comprises: a neck portion (16) defining an opening; a tubular sidewall portion (24) depending therefrom; and an integral base structure (28) depending from the tubular sidewall portion to a closed end (32); the preform having an outside wall face and an inside wall face with one of these, in the base structure, having integrally formed thereon a plurality of filets (36), extending longitudinally of the preform and defining a reinforcement (38) of varying thickness spaced from the closed end and circumscribing the base structure, wherein the filets decrease progressively in width and radial thickness at least from the reinforcing ring toward the closed end. The preform is capable of forming a blow molded plastic container with a bottom portion (130) having a reinforcement of circumferentially continuous radially extending alterations in wall thickness with a regularly undulating cross-section along the circumference. Preferably the filets are integral with the inside wall face. The invention also covers a mold-core rod combination for making such a preform, a process of using such a preform to make plastic containers by stretch/blow molding and containers including containers when produced from said preforms or combinations, or by said process.

The central bottom part consists of chiefly amorphous and/or thermocrystallized material and forms a bulge directed towards the interior of the container. A ring-shaped or band-shaped standing surface (36d) is arranged adjacent the transition of the bottom part into the container wall (32d). Adjacent to the standing surface the container has a circumferential area of material (35d) which through stretching and/or reshaping has undergone flow and through heating has acquired built-in stresses which tend to contract it. The surrounding circumferential area of material prevents the inward bulge of the central bottom part from straightening out and/or turning inside out when the pressure in the container is increased and/or when the temperature of the container material is raised.The invention also relates to a method and a device for achieving the container.

In the process to form a plastic flat bottle by blowing air into an injection molded parison having a bottom, the injection blow molding method of the invention is characterized in that the thicknesses of the portions of the parison to form the front and rear faces of the flat bottle are made larger than the thicknesses of the portions of the parison to form the side end faces of the flat bottle, thereby enlarging the heat capacity in the former portions of the parison to form the front and rear faces than that of the portions of the parison to form the side end faces of the flat bottle so as to make the former portions of the parison to be expanded more easily.

Mold and core rod combination for forming a plastic parison for stretch/blowing into a plastic bottle comprising a core rod with an end mated to the mold so as to permit formation of a parison with a flat on the bottom and having a sharp taper from said flat to the sidewall of the parison. The core rod is preferably shaped to include a shoulder having a substantially straight outer wall at the mouth end of the parison mold, and constructed and arranged with the mold to permit deposit of additional plastic at the inner wall of the shoulder of the parison. The design of the mated mold and core rod combination is based on the recognition that in a continuous bottle forming process a particular area of the parison can be made hotter or cooler by increasing or decreasing the thickness of that area of the parison. Parisons formed with the disclosed mold-core rod combination permit a deeper and longer stretch of the parison without tearing of deformation of the parison bottom or deformation or wrinkling at the shoulder of the finished bottle while providing essential wall strength.

An injection stretch blow molded container is disclosed having an integral tab for hanging the container with the finish end down so as to facilitate removal of the contents of the container. A method of making the container is disclosed which includes the use of an injection molded parison having an integral tab of the size and dimensions desired for the container tab. The parison is then situated in a blowing mold having a pocket for receiving the integral appendage. The parison is stretched until the appendage is received in the pocket in the mold wall and then blown to form the container having a wall conforming to the interior of the blowing mold. A surface of the integral appendage performs the function of the mold wall with respect to a portion of the container.

A polymer parison to be blow molded into a container configuration including a reduced diameter neck and a taper wall disposed between the neck and a greater diameter body portion of the container, which is shaped to permit a sufficient amount of stretch to be imparted to the taper wall forming portion of the parison which has a less-stretching tendency during the blow molding operation. Polyethylene terephthalate exhibits greatly improved characteristics and enhanced durability when it is biaxially stretched more than a certain fixed level. The parison is formed by injection molding such that when the parison is placed in the mold cavity, the taper wall forming portion is at an increased spaced distance away from the cavity wall so as to achieve a sufficient amount of stretch, as noted in the body forming portion of the parison, when it is blown to assume the contour of the mold.
