Polyester containers that are produced from polyester preforms, the preforms preferably having a thermoplastic over-mold layer on at least a part of the exterior surface of the preform. In one aspect the invention can be a perform that is made by over-molding the thermoplastic layer onto the preform surface in one or more over-molding operations. In a single over-molding embodiment the preform has a body layer of a first color and the over-molded layer of a second color. The over-mold layer can have a thickness gradient varying in thickness from one end of the preform to adjacent another end of the preform. This will give the blow molded container a unique appearance where there the container will be substantially transparent or of a first color and the over-mold layers of differing colors.

This invention relates to methods and apparatus for making articles made of polyester, preferably polyethylene terephthalate (PET), having coated directly to at least one of the surfaces thereof one or more layers of thermoplastic material with good gas-barrier characteristics. In one preferred method and apparatus, preforms are injection molded, barrier-coated immediately thereafter, and remain on a mold portion for a time to speed cooling of the completed preform. Preferably the barrier-coated articles take the form of preforms coated by at least one layer of barrier material and the containers are blow-molded therefrom. Such barrier-coated containers are preferably of the type to hold beverages such as soft drinks, beer or juice. The preferred barrier materials have a lower permeability to oxygen and carbon dioxide than PET as well as key physical properties similar to PET. The materials and methods provide that the barrier layers have good adherence to PET, even during and after the blow molding process to form containers from preforms. Preferred barrier coating materials include poly(hydroxyamino ethers).

With this configuration, no thick area is formed in the inner overhang wall portion on the opposite side of the neck ring and/or in the pinch-off portion.

The preform has at least a layer of a polyester resin and is formed by the compression-forming, wherein the time is not shorter than 300 seconds before a calorific value of isothermal crystallization of the layer of the polyester resin at 210° C. reaches a maximum value. The preform is provided suppressing the thermal decomposition of the resin at the time of forming the preform, and effectively suppressing a drop in the inherent viscosity and the formation of the acetaldehyde. Further, a biaxially drawn container is provided having excellent mechanical strength and flavor-retaining property.
